New member..85 K-10 project (ground-up rebuild)
« on: October 09, 2008, 01:04:09 am »
Wanted to show a few pictures of my current project.  I can see from this forum that there is a ton of experience here and I am sure I will be tapping into it for references and suggestions.  The chassis is pretty much done.  Media-blasted to the bone, checked for cracks or other problems, then repainted with 4 coats of industrial black paint.  Suspension rebuilt, new bushings, shocks, springs, differentials serviced, and brake lines reconditioned.  Fuel tank was cleaned, primed, new internal filter and level, new straps and hoses.  Added trailer wiring plug to harness and used all new wire loom front to back.  Engine is a stock 305 (new Jasper reman with only about 8000 documented miles on it when I bought the truck) so all I did is strip it to the long-block, degrease and paint.  All accessory brackets were blasted and painted, new alternator and p/s pump, reman a/c pump.  Stock exhaust manifolds to keep the emissions (95% intact), chrome air filter and valve covers, rebuilt the distributor.  Tranny and t-case reconditioned and serviced, all new u-joints.

Tonight I tore down the interior of the doner cab which I found to have an aftermarket a/c installed (the cab came from a 3/4 ton 2WD with no engine so I didn't know there was an a/c setup inside) but I am going to use the original a/c from the original cab (original cab is too rusted to use....this cab only needs slight floor replacement).  I'll have to modify the firewall a little but no big deal.  Here's a wierd thing, the 2WD and the 4WD cabs are supposed to be slightly different in the floor by the t-case but these are the same (I just need to cut the small hole for the 4x4 shifter)....how did I get so lucky?!?

I'll update in a month or so when I get some substantial work done.

This is actually going to become a daily driver.  The paint will be 2004 Dodge (sorry) Atlantic Blue metalic with a gunmetal grey metalic two-tone on the lower portion of the body.  Will probably do some sort of pinstripe at the top bodyline just to give it some color up there.  All new trim, new tires, new interior (the old was pretty much a loaded Silverado but with a black interior....going to change it to blue with the brushed aluminum trim pieces).  Gonna do a spray-in bedliner and custom step bumper, new front bumper, and new trim rings on the wheels.

??? ???  JUST A LITTLE RANT HERE......When i was 18, after high school I went to college for automotive technology (1986).  I never used that education professionally because towards the end of the schooling, I realized that I loved cars as a hobby but was loosing the fun aspect of it when it became a job.  I originally thought I would graduate and work for GM or somebody and try to cut costs of manufacturing by redesigning what was done.

So why tell you this?  Somebody please explain to me why GM decided to make 2 different firewalls for the 85 truck depending on whether or not you had A/C.  Wouldn't it have been easier and cheaper to make 1 firewall and redesign the heater/air cond. housing?  Why not just use the same housing and if you didn't have A/C, most of the box would be hollow....BIG DEAL!!!  And while we're on the subject, why not just use the same cab whether it is 2WD or 4WD?  If you just used the 4WD cab on all of the trucks, there would be less production over-runs or shortages waiting for the right cab.

I mention all of this because I spent the last 2 nights stripping the firewall of the new cab (that darn spray-on sealant crap is a pain in the &^%#).  Finally tomorrow I get to weld shut the old hole for the heater unit and then cut a new hole for the heater/air cond unit.  Now I'm a little behind where I wanted to be this weekend.  I think I'm gonna take GM to court for causing me stress and depression.  Anyway, the cab is progressing and I'll post pictures when the firewall is completed.

Jiggy,
i know the feeling on that spray ealant on these cabs.I`m using a 1985 a/c cab on my 1980 projet. Iam going back to the non a/c setup as my 80 cab was totally wiped out and i`m welding up all the seams on the 85 cab to make it a smooth firewall. It is indeed a PITA to remove i agree.i tried everything from dotco`s to grinding wheels to lacquer thinner to putty knifes..What a ordeal.

thanks

I found the best thing was justa heat gun and a putty knife....not too bad at all actually.  Then I just go over it with an angle die-grinder with sanding discs on it.  Works really well.
