The VIN is on the frame also.  But if someone did some swapping you just need to identify what you have.
How many bolts are on the axle cover?
It is manual or auto?
What does the tranmission pan look like?
The transfer case may have a tag on it?
Otherswise what is it made of and what is the shift pattern?
do the crossmembers in the frame have openings in them or are they solid?

What items are you having trouble with? These trucks are (for the most part) fairly generalized, meaning the exact year is not really all that important in most cases, I understand it may help in some. Due to the age & the very reason I've mentioned, various year parts end up on allot of trucks. Post what you are having trouble with, I'm sure by photos or description, someone on here can identify it close enough to get you a replacement. Good Luck & Welcome to the site, Lorne

thank you for all of your input. i did not know the frame also had some of the vin number on it. i should describe alittle more about my truck. i has a 350 in it with a th350 transmission. 205 transfer case dana 44 front axle but it is stamped 44-8f i am not sure what the 8f is. the rear is a 12 bolt. i have found the sway bar is off a 73-74 since the diameter is 1 1/4" so i was thinking it that earlt but the tie rods that were off a 76-80 and like i said the cab is 81 3/4 ton 2wd. i am in the process of re-doing most of the suspension and the transmission is leaking and was looking to maybe fix that. who ever worked on the truck before me did a hack and whack job so i am going over all of it one section at a time. pics will follow but need to get the camera out and start taking pics. i also have some numbers that i got off the tranny, transfer case, engine, and frame that i took down but cant seem to make any sense of them. thanks

If you know it is a TH350 and NP205 with D44 and 12B axles that is all you really need to know.
Sway bars are interchangable (along with about everything else on the truck)
Based on what you are describing someone just swapped cabs on the truck you have and it is sitting on a 73-80 Frame/suspension.
