4 spd shifter removal
« on: October 19, 2008, 09:01:15 pm »
Guys, how do I get this blasted thing out?

I tried the "push downward on the ball counterclockwise" as the crappy picture in my trusty Haynes manual says to do, but it doesn't seem to be working.

This is a 4 speed (I am guessing since it was closest match I could find in the book) L,1,2,3....

The ball seems to rotate and move downward when I push it down and turn but for the life of me when I pull up on the stick it won't come out.

It looks like there's a roll pin or something on the side, does it need to be pounded out?

Yea, I tried that but it isn't working.  I guess I have to push it down further though.

What is your tool of preference for this one Vile?  I tried a pair of long needle nose pliers and a pair of regular pliers too (just spread open enough to push down on the ball).

Looks like I am just going to have to spend some more time fighting it.

If it is any help.  I cleaned it off and used my hand and a clean rag to get them out.

yep that's what I do. Push down and turn with a rag.

Ok, you guys make it sound really simple so I am sure there's gotta be something jammed with mine.

I tried the rag method, and pushing down and turning with whatever I could find that would put pressure on both sides of the "ball" and not slip while I tried turning but I am having a heck of a time with it.

I'll get it... Since it appears from you guys input there's no real magic here I just need some patience.  >:(

Thanks!

well push a little harder. Take a plastic mallet or block of wood and tap it down to break it free if it's stuck. Use a little penetrating oil if necessary and push down and turn counterclockwise.

Gentlemen we have liftoff....

Holy Christmas, what a mountain out of a mole hill.  Thankfully I just took time with this and waited for input without fooling around too much.

Vile, I used your suggestion and took a 1x3 and started tapping on the ball.  It actually then sort of turned and popped loose all on its own (pure luck actually).

What I discovered was a big surprise.  Man I woulda killed for an exploded parts diagram and then I would have known what I was dealing with!  The "roll pin" I'd mentioned is actually TWO pins that hold the outer shell around the separate inner "cup"!   I'd have never guessed this was how the thing was put together by relying on my @#*$&@ Haynes manual!

Thanks guys for sticking with me and the tips.  (Jeez, if we needed a "technical writeup" on removing a simple shifter this would about do it huh!!?)   :D ;D

....and exploded view-----

yeah a lot of people ask the same question so don't feel bad. I had a guy come in with the top of the casr cracked off because he tried to get it out by removing the roll pins. I had to weld it all back together for him.
