Title: My '86 Project
Post by: dv8customs on November 24, 2008, 08:58:11 pm
I am new here and thought I would share my project. I have been working on it for quite a while because I just don't have the amount of free time I would like to work on it, but I am nearing the home stretch now. Hope you like it.

Got any pics of the firewall?  What did you do about the steering column/shaft?
Title: Re: My '86 Project
Post by: dv8customs on November 24, 2008, 09:45:43 pm
Firewall is untouched. I haven't put my steering shaft back in yet. I know that I will at least have to make a small notch in the upper control arm for clearance. I hope that I don't have to add any joints in the shaft but time will tell.

I love what you did to the tailgate.  That is the kind of thought and work that is missing these days from customizing shops that are all about bolt-on items, etc.  Most people (myself included) would not have attempted something like that just because of the amount of work both in welding and sanding/prepwork for painting.  Can't wait to see more pics.
Title: Re: My '86 Project
Post by: dv8customs on November 25, 2008, 01:06:23 pm
Half way through that tailgate I was wondering why I did it myself. I haven't gotten it sanded yet, just roughed in. I have been avoiding it because the space is sooooo small. Don't even get me started on the time it took to do the fender. And on top of that when I was priming the fender it fell of the sawhorses and took some damage. That was a sad day. I am not as worried about tackling the passenger side because I have a better game plan now.

UH!  I planned that fender mod for one of mine.  Oh well...
nice touch on the tailgate, that is some serious commitment!
If you z'd the frame more than 2" (which would be silly), you will need joints.

WOW! Thats alot of work. I like those subtle changes that make you look twice to see what is different. What color is it going to be?

My Z is 2" so hopefully just a little notch in the upper arm.

Planning on a 2 tone with turqoise on bottom and a classic white on top.

I just reread that and just to clarify anything less than a 2" z would be silly...
Since you went 2", you might can notch it and it work, but have a spare on hand.  Joints are less intrusive.  Are you going to be bagged?

I had been kicking around the idea of shaving the wiper cowl ever since I took it off 2 years ago. Tonight I decided to stop thinking about it and just do it...

That's an understatement. You come across as a Foose/Coddington think it/build it kind of guy. Great work. I can't wait to see it when it's done.

Let's not get carried away... I'm just a guy with some sheet metal and a welder. All you need is to be dumb enough to get yourself into some of the projects I have (the tailgate and sectioned fender) and then the patience to actually finish what you started......Luckily it seems I have both. :P

Looks like it's body dropped too. I hear ya, I just hope that when I try to teach myself to weld i'll be able to fabricate what I invision in my head. I think it's awesome that you have the time, place and means to create your madness.

They sure clean it up quite a bit. I saw some wells like that from suicidedoors.com(decal on the back glass of one of the pics at the start of the thread) but not sure if they're the same.

Those are just regular 32" trailer fenders. Got them at Tractor Supply for $20 a piece. I am going to clean the firewall up some but don't plan to fully shave it.

WOW! That's some neat stuff you got goin' on. I've been saying for quite awhile that the wheelwell on our trucks are really an oddity, not way different like an old '50's-'60's car, but just enough to make it difficult when trying to make one sit & look just right. Keep the photos comming! Lorne
Title: Re: My '86 Project
Post by: 69byrd on December 29, 2008, 10:57:47 pm
I was thinking about using the trailer fenders also to give me a little more room between the tires and the wheelwell. With the drop I have my truck wants to rub when I turn deep. Thats what I dont like about the stock wheelwells they just dont allow you enough room for more than 5" of drop.

I continued my sanding saga on the fender and am getting very close to having it done and I have almost finished shaving the passenger door but ran out of daylight. In this side shot you can see that the fender heights came out pretty close to one another.

I live in East Texas...

In the next couple of days I hope to get the fender and door finished off.
The suicide door kit I initially ordered was on backorder for at least 4 more weeks so I found another vendor that has them in stock and will order them today. In about a week I should be getting started on making those doors swing backwards.

Awesome work so far!  If possible, could you take some pictures during the install?  I'm thinking of suicide doors for mine too and it would be handy for all of us if we had pictures and a guide for a 73-87-specific install.  But only if it's not too much trouble.  Keep up the good work!

So far the install has been pretty straight forward. The only issue I ran into was with the bottom hinge pocket. I wanted to space the hinges as far apart as I could for stability but that put the lower hinge half way through that step right in front of the back wall. It was difficult cutting that out with just a sawzall and a cut off wheel but I made it fit (with a little added help from a big hammer). If I had a plasma cutter I could have saved about an hours worth of work. ::)

could you take some pic's of your reinforce door jam?

I haven't done that yet but what I plan to do is cut a piece of angle (1x1x1/8) that fits between the hinge pockets and against the door jamb. I will drill some holes in the jamb and then weld the angle to the hinge pockets and plug weld it to the jamb. That will make that area plenty strong.

Not complete yet but here is a start

First I dissasembled the hinges and ran a piece of 3/8" rod through the hinges. I had determined the maximum spacing I could get in the door jamb was 11 1/4".

I cut a piece of 2x2 angle iron to 11 1/4 and welded it to the back side of the hinges.

Next I located the hinges in the jamb and clamped them in place so I could mark the holes.

My bottom hinge was low enough that it interfered with the step in front of the back wall so that had to be cut out as well. Not easy with the tools I have so it is ugly. You could mount your bottom hinge higher and avoid this but the further apart the hingers are the more stable they will be.

Once I cut out enough room inside I slid the whole assembly into place.

Make sure everything is square and trim off the excess hinge and tack it into place.

If you are confident everything is square you can go ahead and weld the hinge in at this point like I did or wait till you finish the door as well.

Tomorrow I plan to have the passenger door finished so look for more in a few days.

Post by: dv8customs on February 07, 2009, 07:06:22 pm
I put the door latch back to keep the door shut while I welded in the bottom hinge. The door latch is where the top hinge goes so I had to do the bottom and then remove the latch to do the top hinge.

The hinges sit deep in the door so I had to make some brackets.

Once I cut out the louvers there where some big holes in the end of the door that needed to be filled as well so I made another bracket.

You definately have to pay attention to what you are doing, but the good thing about metal is that if you cut off too much you can always weld it back on. ;)

Hmmm, if that's the case is it possible to have the hinges closer to the inside of the cab?  (i.e. cut the pockets closer to the weatherstrip)

Title: Re: My '86 Project

Possibly. It's really just depends on how far you want the door to open. The closer the hinge is to the weather stripping the less you will be able to open the door before it contacts the cab.

There is no window interference. The scissor mechanism that moves the window is several inches away.

very nice work man, do you plan on shavin the handles and making then pop or leave the stock door handle and reconfigure the release linkage...I only ask cause I did that to one of my old trucks and it blows ppl's minds when you open the door with a stock handle and its actually a suicide. Also on a side note..you should fill in the holes on the inner side of the door.. it flexes less when you do so and then theres less stress on the hinges as well.

keep up the good work though...looks sweet
Title: Re: My '86 Project
Post by: dv8customs on April 14, 2009, 03:48:53 pm
The door handles are already shaved. I put all of my bracing at the rear of the door as that is where the load is applied. I have about a 1/4" of sag that still needs to be addressed. If I weld up all the holes I won't have access to the window mechanism/latches.

Little update....

My install kit showed up this weekend so I got starte on it. Had to recess the striker a bit to get everything to work right and in the process I cut out an unecessarily large hole.

 Went from this
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v689/townzenm/DSCF1824.jpg)

To this
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v689/townzenm/DSCF1835.jpg)

Still have plenty to do but it's a start. I am going to add another piece to the top so that it flows back in like the bottom does. The transition from the striker plate to the bottom piece I added looks a little odd because it goes from a square edge to a rounded edge so that is something I have to work out as well.

The rear of the fender is unfinished of course but since you can see it now I had to do something about it.

Made a filler to take care of most of the gap
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v689/townzenm/DSCF1894.jpg)

Then made several more and got them all tacked up

The old paint gave it some style but it being about 15 different colors makes body work a little tricky. I wanted to get it one color for the show and then once I get back it will help a lot trying to get this thing blocked out. It is in pretty good shape but there are definately some areas that still need attention. Hope to get it put back together tonight.

Aside from the metal work on the front end, what way did you actually lower the truck?  I see in the pic you still have the shackle hanger there but do not see the leaf springs there.  Did you use some kinda 2 or 4 point link set up in the rear.  What about the front?  Looks good, I'll see ya at the show on Sunday the track is up the road from where I live!!!

Triangulated 4 link in the rear with bags on the lower bars and 3" drop spindles and a 2" Z in the front. I need to cut those rear hangers off but haven't got around to it yet.

Sorry to sound shallow but can you explain the 2" Z for the front?  Thanks.

On these trucks the front control arms are lower than the frame. In order to get them above or even with the frame you cut the frame just in front of the firewall and raise it up, in my case 2". You then cut the front frame horns off and lower them the corresponding amount. The end result is that the frame contacts the ground before the control arms do.

Post by: brlarl on June 16, 2009, 10:26:59 am
Ok I understand what you are saying........doing this will raise the motor 2" under the hood?  Correct?  Did you run into any clearance issues like with the inner fenders or the tranny?  Sorry for so many ?????????  Thanks
Title: Re: My '86 Project
Post by: dv8customs on June 16, 2009, 10:33:21 am
You got it ;D

I threw out the inner fenders and made my own but they likely would have interfered. There isn't much room between the transmission and the floor so even with a mild Z like I have you will likely need to modify the floor. I cut out the floor above the transmission in anticipation of this but don't yet know how much I will need to raise it as I haven't put the motor back in yet.

You can chop the crossmember about 1.5" (we still build these) and it won't change the engine position at all.

Since sectioning my fenders somewhat limits my ability to turn, unless at full lift, I decided to narrow my front track width 2.25" total. I got brackets to move my upper arms and I am having my stock cross member modified. I hope to get it back this weekend and if so will post some updates next week.

**EDIT**
Unfortunately my cross member wasn't ready yet but I have decided to go ahead and body drop the truck while I have it apart.

Got the bed off today and started unbolting the cab. Got the rear two bolts out but after a couple of turns both front bolts started spinning. From what I can tell my only option is to cut a hole in the floor to get the nut. Hope to get the cab off before the end of the week and start on the frame work this weekend.

what exactly did you do to your cross member? did you just raise everything up 3 inches? because obviously stock the ball joints run out, but i see you brought the top one in a few inches too, so is your whole front more narrow now?
Title: Re: My '86 Project
Post by: dv8customs on August 12, 2009, 06:52:53 am
Everything is up 3" and in 1-1/8" per side
Title: Re: My '86 Project

if you dont mind me asking why 1-1/8th in? so you can clear more of a dished rim?

That will give me a little more room in the fender which will be beneficial when driving low. The 1-1/8" measurement was determined by the brackets I used to relocate my upper arms. Those brackets came from Suicide Doors and are the ones used with their raised cross member kit. The brackets moved my upper arms up and in by that amount so I had to match that with the lower arms.

From today.... The fender is just resting on the tire. I am going to have to raise the inner fender for it to mount properly.
When I modified my crossmember I didn't take anything out of the overall height of it. As it is now it lays out the same time the pinch does. Not sure if I am going to cut more off of it or not. :-\

Man that looks nice. But something funny when I started to build my sons truck I told him the higher the grades in school the more lift he got and if his grades dropped so does the truck. I think I'm going to use a picture of your truck to show him how low it can go if he don't keep up the good grades. He actually has done really well so he got a 6"lift but I like teasing him. Your truck is comming along good though keep it up or I guess down in your case. lol.

My trailer fenders were too low so today I cut them out along with a lot of other sheet metal to give it room to lay with the fenders on.

Narrowing the track width helped a lot too. I still have to roll the fender lip but I think this is pretty good for it being layed out.

Thought I should check and see if I actually got enough lift to turn and I think I should be okay.

That would be very cool.  Like the 60's Lincoln Continentals.

I keep changing my mind on color scheme so it's still up in the air. I am leaning towards a light blue though.

Trimmed the bottom off the driver side fender and started working on the fender lip. Finally had to give my buddy's wheels back so I am back on the 15's  :-[

You can cut it off a little at a time and weld it back up or do as I did and just roll it under.

It's been awhile since i've logged on and this thread still amazes me. I just wish I had the means to get bags for my 85. I like it but some times I wish I could raise it up a bit while driving. Some of the roads MD and especially PA aren't for that cool for the lowered. Awesome work!!

Kicked around a lot of ideas as to where to mount my tanks and finally decided the only place they would really fit is behind the rear wheels. Might need to make some shields to block anything coming off the rear wheels but that won't be hard.

Finally got a chance to do a little work again. Got the transmission cross member in. Still need to fab some motor mounts and then I can put the actual transmission mount on the cross member.

Then I notched my front cross member a bit so my bags wouldn't rub.

It's only coming down 2-1/4" so I don't think the end result will be immediately noticable to most. I wanted to keep this mod subtle like the fenders and tailgate.

No offence taken ;D

After work I managed to cut one door so I could see how the window fit was. Not the best pic but you can see how much I will need to widen the rear post to fill that gap back up.

I was also glad to see that the wing window did indeed still fit. As I expected, the top of it protrudes into the door so it won't be able to open. But with the weatherstrip installed you will never know it goes up that high in the door.

Here is an idea for you.  Can you get the metal off the glass on the window?  If you can, take it to a glass shop and they should have a big belt sander that can grind it down to your needs.  Just take a marker and outline what you need.  That way it will still be useable.  Work your magic on the metal to fit back on.  Just an idea ???
Title: Re: My '86 Project
Post by: dv8customs on November 16, 2009, 06:25:56 pm
I believe that little window is tempered so it can't be cut or ground down. Could be wrong but that is the way I understand it.

I have a good friend that is a glass man.  I'll call him and ask him.  I used to help him gring glass to fit table tops and what not.  I'll call in a minute...
Title: Re: My '86 Project
Post by: dv8customs on November 16, 2009, 06:39:33 pm
Thanks! I think that the side windows and back glass are tempered so they can't be modified. The windshield is laminate so it can be cut down without breaking.
Title: Re: My '86 Project
Post by: low budget on November 16, 2009, 07:30:10 pm
Just got off the phone with him and your right.  You would have to have it custom made.  Tempered glass can't be modified that much if any.  Very touchy stuff to modify.  It was a thought...
Title: Re: My '86 Project
Post by: dv8customs on November 16, 2009, 07:40:57 pm

I don't mind not being able to use the wing window and once the weatherstripping is in you won't notice anything different.

Title: Re: My '86 Project
Post by: nucknoel89 on November 17, 2009, 05:27:03 pm
Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think the one size windows would fit.  I thought then when you chop a truck the angle of the windshield and doors changes slightly, so that glass wouldn't fit anyway.
Title: Re: My '86 Project
Post by: dv8customs on November 17, 2009, 06:04:42 pm
It wouldn't fit without a bit of modification. The angle of the windshield and door will stay the same but the issue you run into is the length of the top of the door. Using the method I am the door will end up being wider at the top than it was originally. Obviously you can't make the glass wider so you have to rework the door frame to match the glass.
Title: Re: My '86 Project
Post by: Captkaos on November 18, 2009, 11:47:40 am
Someone else did this and he found the same issues you will find.  getting someone to make the side glass that is wider.  He asked if OPP would make him a set from templates, they will, but you need to make sure they are perfect.  OPP would make 2 sets of glass for him, just in case.  It is NOT cheap though.
Title: Re: My '86 Project
Post by: dv8customs on November 18, 2009, 12:44:37 pm
Custom glass is never cheap. It's much cheaper to just move the sheet metal around a bit.

I personally would've skinned the roof off a bfew inches from the edges, then all you have to do is trim it down a lil to fit...and not have to weld through the center of the roof...just my opinion though
other than that the truck is lookin really good man.

Nice chop and fender and tailgate mod. It gives it a real "one of a kind don't know what exactly you did" look. You're definitely a sheetmetal craftsman!

I don't know if you were serious about the black top... but I like the contrasting colors. Not sure about black and white though.

Hey guys, I need some help. I am trying to get my doors finished up but I need some info. Since my window doesn't roll all the way up I am left with a gap between the glass and door.

All I have to do is widen that portion of the pillar which is no problem but I don't know how far. Can someone measure how far their glass extends into the door channel? Remember I don't have any weather stripping so measurements need to be from the door edge. A picture would be awesome if possible. Thanks!

That chop looks slick.  Not too much, but enough to be noticed.  Did you consider a raked chop?  I've never seen that on a pickup.  Maybe there's a reason for that.

I wanted to keep the overall effect of the chop subtle so I chopped it straight.

Food for thought,The back window on the burbs are curved.they don't work for a one piece front unless it's chopped. You can get them cheap at a u-pull-it and then have it cut down. :D

Remanufactured unit from ATSCO. Autozone carries them and I am using P/N 6406. Without a core it will cost me about $110 for a power unit. If you have a core they are around $85

for a 1pc front window. Take the long window from a burb.It has the same shape ,but it is not as tall as the door glass.if the chop is 3" the glass has the same slight curve that you need. Then make a pattern for the front and have the long window cut to fit.buy the way love all the work you have done on your truck, and doing it all outside. You have some talent :)

With the frame Z'd and my upper control arms moved up there is no way to make the stock steering work. I am hoping I can get by with 2 u-joints but may need 3.

It will do just fine, it is a power rack from a Mustang. Same rack used in countless conversions. Also the same rack that you would use with a crossmember from Porterbuilt or Suicide Doors.

I will take some good pictures for you then but it may be a couple weeks before I get to it. I am supposed to be helping a friend suicide the rear doors of his crew cab and we have to get it completed by Tex Mex.
Title: Re: My '86 Project
Post by: Captkaos on February 26, 2010, 10:04:52 am
In a nutshell you weld the mount tabs to the front of the crossmember to attach the rack where it needs to go and then hook up the tierod ends.  Then get some borgensen joints and route the shaft back to the column.

As dv8stated, serveral people have been doing this.  Turner Enterpises started it with rack setups on his sectioned crossmembers, I had plans to put them on one of my chopped crossmembers.  Jim Meyers has been doing it for years and he uses Tbird power racks, then Porterbuilt...
Title: Re: My '86 Project
Post by: dv8customs on February 26, 2010, 10:46:56 am
Yep, that really is all there is to it. Well that and weld in the frame notches for the rack to pass through. Only question I really have is where to set the rack, I assume it just needs to be set up so that everthing is level at ride height?
Title: Re: My '86 Project
Post by: Captkaos on February 26, 2010, 11:49:36 am
Get it at ride height and then make it as level as possible.  You would rather have the rack higher than lower.

I'd like to see some set ups, took a good look today and I definitely am going to have to do it, looks like I could do 3 joints depending on the angles. Is 3 going to cause play? And how long is the rack your using, from end to end then from end to steering shaft? I'll try an look some stuff up but really know absolutely nothing about r&p

thanks alot

3 should be fine, you would have to have that many for one of my chopped crossmembers.

I personally would've skinned the roof off a few inches from the edges, and not have to weld through the center of the roof.
Unfortunately I completely agree with this. Over the years I've done &/seen done a few things like that & was able to closely watch the effects.
The welding/heavy fillerwork out in the middle of a large panel like that will most likely show up after a few hot days &/or cool, damp nights. The idea of having the weld around the edges (even in 2"3" or so) doesn't make the "hard" & "soft" variations like the overlap/weld in the + shape. Just like when the dew starts setting & you see the understructure of a hood or trunk, this + (usually just in one spot or Two) will show up & be the spot that will either stay or sink.
The nicest chop job I've personally got to see over time was an early S-10 that a friend did & used one of our roofs as the new skin. The welding was all around the edges & never changed in the hot/cold/damp cycles.
Hate to be the barer of bad news, but that is my findings after doing & seeing some "not the way we wanted them to turn out"...think patching a couple sunroof holes, big Chrismas tree on the little station wagon roof, a chopped top or Two, etc. etc. are some of the examples. The "correct" time & materials were used, but the results were less than perfect.
GREAT work on the truck though! Thanks for sharing, Lorne

Thanks for the heads up, after a couple weeks of trying to get the roof lined out how I wanted it I redid the whole thing. I did as was suggested and cut the center out about 2" from the edge all the way around and welded in a single piece. Should have done that from the start because it was much easier.

I sure hope it will. Tried getting the motor to fit a couple times but i think i need to trim a bit more on the firewall. Getting teh motor in and running is the biggest task i have left to do and then it's all down hill after that.

Hey, just a question about your suicide doors.  How much of a gap between door and body is there when it's open a full 90 degrees?  I'm looking at suiciding mine and I'm wondering how close I can have my hinges to the inside of the door/cab while still avoiding hitting anything.

DV8,

That is an awesome truck!  I am from Carthage.  I used to hang out with Shay and Brandon.  I will have to try and get back down there for a show.  I am currently stationed in Virginia.  I will be keeping an eye on your build to see how it turns out.

Ahhhh. Thats spiffy. I like it. So, are those one way pull switches, or are they potentiometers and you can turn them to adjust the dimmer switch and the intermittent wipers? Looks real good. I'm thoroughly impressed with the work.
Title: Re: My '86 Project
Post by: dv8customs on February 24, 2012, 12:22:26 pm
One is a pull switch to turn the headlights on. I am mounting the dimmer for the headlights in the floor. The other is a potentiometer style for the wipers.

I believe it!  The work you've done to your truck is no less than AMAZING!  you do what most of us wish we could do!  Thats an amazing truck you have there man!

Maybe you need a PowerBlock show....   ;)

How hard was to cut the dash? It's just spot weld or bolted?

Congrats on the spread, well deserved.

The dash is spot welded (a lot) to the window opening and is also bolted on both sides.

Tuesday dirt for my new 30x30 shop will be delivered and then the tractor work begins the following Monday. Once the shop is up I will be back to making progress on the C10.

The work you have done without a shop is awesome...can't wait to see what you can do with a shop.
Add a few pics of the shop too.
