Why do you think you need a ring and pinion?

I've yet to break a GM ring and pinion ( I've broke a few spider gears on a 10 bolts).
My 81 stepside runs a 14 bolt SF with Yukon gears and an Eaton posi in it, so far it's been great.

Check the operation of the emergency brake adjuster and everything else in both drums. Lube the friction points (not the shoes obviously lol) while you are at it.
