Anybody run those bronze/gold filters in their carb?

I searched the web and I only found a few articles/threads mentioning them.  But they were conflicting.  I have 2 filters in my system - one before the electric fuel pump, and one between the carb and regulator.  Last time I took my carb apart, I found crap in it.  The stuff looked like that pepper you get from Pizza Hut or Dominoes.  I'm not sure where it came from though.  All my lines are either braided or aluminum, and I run a fuel cell(with foam).  Anyway, when I put the carb back together I threw in those little filters that go in the fuel inlets.  Was that a bad move?  Will they be a big restriction in my system?  Is it possible that the crap I found in the carb actually came from inside the carb?

Are you talking about the sock filter on the inlet? Its not a bad thing to have but they do periodically plug up with junk. the nice thing about them is they can catch a potential piece of crap from getting into the float chamber.

They are the little metallic cylinders that go in the fuel inlet.  I think I've heard them called cintered filters...I think.

Team, Those have a rep. of being restrictive, I've never personally used or tested them to verify. The "pepper" sounds like the rubber from inside the braided hose. Did you cut it with a abrasive wheel? It's a good idea to run a coffee can full or so of fuel through the lines before hooking up to the carb. anytime you install a new hose. Lorne

I think I did cut one line with a cutoff wheel.  The "pepper" seemed to be different colors though(red,yellow,brown, and black).  I've found this same looking stuff in my water filter in my kitchen faucet.

Yeah, I don't understand it either, but I'm finding the same exact stuff in both.  I'll see if I can get a picture of the stuff from the sink since I already cleaned out the carb.  Is it possible that the insides of the carb is flaking off?  I'm betting the pipes going to the kitchen sink are rusty and flaking off too.

That's what my wife said too.  Maybe one of my neighbors is putting stuff in my tank(from there own faucet).  But I figured my 2 filters would have caught it.

Two times I got really fine dirt in my edelbrock, like 6 months apart. 

I put a big competition filter on it and haven't had problems since. I think it might have been the introduction of ethanol blends and it was stirring up dirt in the tanks of the gas station and the fuel tank of my pickup.

Now that I think about it, the gas stations here in town have been rumored to be adding water to their gas to stretch it.  If their water pipes are as bad as mine, they probably have pepper in their gas.  I'm guessing my filters aren't doing a good enough job, so I need to step up to some real filters.  I have those chrome looking(not bling bling)canister filters made by TransDapt...I liked the compared to the glass ones as a result of my "blowthrough test".  I tried to get a picture of the pepper looking stuff, but it wouldn't show up good.  Just imagine crushed pepper in different colors.  I think I'm gonna just remove the bronze filters and install some good filters in place of my TransDapt filters.

The bigger one is what I use. I figure it'll leave the dirt in the bottom of the filter and not take it to the float chamber to keep the rods in enrichment.
