big block weight compared to small block
« on: February 10, 2009, 07:41:52 pm »
How much more does a bigblock setup weigh than a comparable small block, i.e. with the same accesories and stuff?

It's around a hundred pounds more.

Is that all?  All this time, I thought it was more like 200 lbs.  So if you had an aluminum-headed BB, it would weigh roughly what an all-iron SB weighs?

I always thought it was more like 200lbs more with iron heads.

I think it is 120lbs.  Aluminum heads make it very close to the SBC weight.

Thanks guys!  Even if it's 200 that's not bad.   I'm just kinda throwing around the idea of swapping to a big block when the time comes.

Another question, what do you think it costs to get all the accessory brackets, etc for a big block.  and  does a big block use the same mounts a small block does?  I'd likely be getting everything out of the junkyard, so if it's not too hard to find I'd like to get a serpentine setup since I have to buy it all anyway....

The BBC will use the same frame mounts if that is what you are talking about.  As for brackets, http://www.alangrovecomponents.com/ should have some if you can't find them in the salvage yard.

Also for accessories, check these out.  It's a good idea if you want a factory-style serpentine setup, but don't want to go fishin' for the BB serpentine setup.

That looks like the way to go right there!
