Rear differential cover
« on: February 13, 2009, 08:04:23 pm »
Any one know what the torque specs are for a chevrolet 10 bolt rear differential cover?
And how well do the chrome covers last? and are they worth it?

not sure on the torque specs,   but i just got done taking all the schrome stuff on my 82 off.   (transmission pan, valve covers, rear diff cover)  and every one of them had rusted badly, had pin holes everywhere, and leaked.   depending on what you get, it could be better than what i had,   but i will never put another chrome thing on my truck, unless it's something that came factory.

I've never seen chrome ones that didn't rust. Aluminum is the way to go. A easy way to dress up the stock steel cover is to scuff it down, shoot it with undercoating, then install it with stainless bolts.

The one grunt method, tighten them to one grunt.

This is a good method, I use it. If install anything chrome that gets near oil I always grind/sand the chrome from the gasket surface, insuring that that there is a good seal. See if I don't do this it always leaks!

23 lb-ft on the bolts. I use the chrome ones on some trucks but if it's going to see a lot of wintery type weather they will rust. I don't think you have to worry about one of these rusting

I had clear top valve covers on my 84 K5. They were made by a company called crossfire and Jegs sold them. Don't know whatever happened to them though, they were awesome.
