He probably incorrectly installed the B+ cable and it's touching ground. also make sure he hooked the small wire to the S terminal.

He just called & said that he didn't mark anything when he took the old starter off - He said there are 3 threaded rods/bolts on there & one is small. One of the bigger "bolts" has what looks like a "I" on there, I'm assuming that is the negative....?

My guess is that he's crossed some wires somewhere, but ti's been a while since I had to mess w/ a starter. Thanks for the help.

There is no negative on the starter. the housing is negative. Your B+ cable, and fusible links attach to the B+ terminal. The small wire goes to the S terminal. The R terminal you will not use unless you have points

if the negative cable is all the way down there at the starter, you have a big problem.  that puppy is usually either attached to the alt bracket for grounding or intake bolt for grounding.

Anyway, it is most likely the postive wire.  it can be black or red if the truck is old.  Always take the cable off the batter BEFORE working with the starter.   Then, no spark.

Or when your brother attached the positive cable he positioned it so that it in contact with the s terminal of the solenoid.
