A833 Rebuild
« on: June 20, 2009, 10:19:19 am »
Any one rebuild one of these ? What is the best kit for this (I need Syncros)? Anyone have a picture or where to buy Gm Tool J-29793?
Tore it all down found the bearing in the back is gone (why is the cage plastic?) , one of the syncros is cracked.
The person that worked on this should be shot. He put 80/90 in both the trans and transfer case my feeling it was making noise so he thought thicker oil. Both units have been apart before (Rtv instead of gaskets) but he never changed the U-Joints (still has the plastic in the drive shaft no clips).

Will post pics before I put it in the press lol
This trans will go into the Blazer when its done

Here is some pics

Main Shaft about to go in the cleaner

Busted Rear Case Bearing

Broken Syncro

Other Side of the bad bearing pic not to clear but alot of the balls are "pitted"

Everything is disassembled and sitting in the parts cleaner (except for the case and adapter. the adapter has a broken mount bolt I got to get out)

We had a death in the family early last week so nothing could be done finally getting back into it. My son has put the clutch back in and the bellhousing is soaking in the cleaner my job of rebuilding the tranny is suppose to be started I have everything broke down and on a scrap piece of copper tubing but am not sure if I remember how it goes lol haynes and chilton are not that descriptive. Hoping by the end of the day to have it back together. Slight problem is the one bolt for the rear trans mount was busted I drilled it and tried a easy out (not that easy) so I got it cherry red without taking it out (the easy out) and that busted in the bolt. I have tried welding a nut on the other side welded a cheap 10 mm socket on it and it wont budge. Not sure if I want to tackle that now or wait  till the tranny needs it lol.

Trans is now on hold
Over 14 hours between yesterday and today.
All I got done is the Ez out , out I tried a number 5 with a pipe wrench would not budge so I drilled it out and tapped it 3/8 (suppose to be 7/16 but dont think it should be too much problem)

Put the first gear on the main shaft (think it is second gear ) and have been fighting getting the snapring on. there is no holes to put the snap ring pliers and there is two (the same size) I got it to the first slot but now cant get it out to slid down to the second slot. Since its the 4th nothing is now open .

Tranny is done  ???

I got po'd trying to line the counter gear and thrust washers up I threw the tranny across the room (I was frustrated but it didnt do my shoulder any good)
Of course the case cracked looks like I will buy a rebuilt one I dont have the patience for rebuilding transmissions so I will leave that to the experts.

Leave it to the wife ;D

She tells me that I never quit on something before why start now. Grr

I have welded the case (both inside and out) never mig welded Cast Iron lol

Took forever to grind the weld inside the case down.

I poured some solvent on it afterwards and it didnt leak might run another bead on the outside and not grind it flat can still see the crack but no day light or fluid comes thru

in my tantrum I lost one needle bearing and a thrust washer got to call tomorrow and see if the small parts kit comes with it

Frogman, it's only a truck dude. You're going to let something another man made beat you up? If a man made product can kick your ass and you give into it, it's like getting your own ass kicked. Always remember, "it's only a car dude" and walk away. If you can handle your cool in life then you can handle it on a hunk of metal. Get it fixed and get it done. We're here for help...here's an E-beer. Take a chill pill and get back on ity when you're cool.

You are so right Ville (as usual) . I worked on the trans since pretty much Thursday night (The broken rear trans mount bolt. Saturday I was at it till Midnight)  and could not get the countergear thrust washers to line up (stay in the slot while I put the gear between em) I got it once had the countergear all in and the front spring clutch (not sure if that is what its called it is what makes the truck select 1st or 2nd gear)slid off and the three pieces went flying so I had to take it apart. Will say the wifes broom made a good tool for the needle bearings in the countergear though she wasnt happy.

SUCCESS or so I hope lol
Got the countergear in place got the mainshaft in no needle bearings came out. Have still put the reverse assembly in but the PITA part is done. What I could get done last weekend took only a hour and a half today.

Took the wifes broom and a old flag pole (that is what fit the case and the washer) that is what held the washers in while I put the counter gear in. I left them in till I was putting the shaft in pulled the back one out and feed a ratchet strap under the gear to line up the gear and case I had so much grease holding the needle bearings in that the shaft slid right thru
