I wouldn't pump money into a 305 if your goal is tire shredding. Build a 350

The best way increase the torque of 305 is to tear it out and drop a 383 in its place.
But if that's not in the budget and you would still like to modify, stick to improvements that can be transferred over to a 350 when you do get the funds. My first course of action would be a free flowing exhaust, from the exhaust ports to the tail pipes.
As far as engine mods, I am a firm believer that if you want maximum torque from idle to 3000 the stock intake manifold will be your best bet. There are slight modifications you can make to the area immeditely under the carb to improve flow and fuel distribution. They are outlined in this book:
http://www.amazon.com/How-Build-Horsepower-David-Vizard/dp/1884089143/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1249158962&sr=8-2
Also, in the same rpm range and where fuel efficiency is still important, the Q-jet is hard to beat, just give it a good rebuild and slap it back on. But if you are interested in 3000-up range (without dramatically impacting the idle-3000 range) and fuel efficiency can take a back seat an Edelbrock performer manifold and carb is a safe bet.
Just keep in mind, as you make modifcations, that your ultimate goal should be to bolt these parts on a 350 or 383.
Also if your ignition is overdue for a tune up then you might consider upgrading the coil and module in the process. Petronix makes a nice little tune up kit for them. And there is a cheap eBay HEI unit that I have heard good things about around here.

Here's what ya do. Run some hose from your washerpump to the backtires. Fill the reservoir with bleach when you wanna smokem, push the washer switch to soak the tires with bleach, and let'r rip. It'll accomplish the same thing, lol. Now, if you want to yank the front end off the ground and leave them with their jaws on the ground, the 383 stroker, or a biglock is the way to go. Spinning tires means your sitting still wasting money. I do have a slight addiction to it tho.

Like was said if you want more power do things that can be transfered to a 350 later down the road! Rear gears will help alot too! As will a nice higher stall tq converter! Good combo that worked well in my 82 ta was a 305 with shaved 416 heads summit 1103 cam rpm intake 3500 stall and 3.73s ill prob run the same cam in my 86 k10 when i build a lil motor for it.

I thought by 85 they came with a HEI? IIRC my old 86 had an electronic Q-jet also.
Ever think about some exhaust work? It seems like your concentrating on the intake side.

I have the same truck. '85 305 and 2.73's. I plan on doing full exhaust and a gear swap. Beyond that, maybe a performer intake. First and foremost make sure your truck is tuned well, that can help a lot.
