Those in BC, who does good differential work?
« on: August 12, 2009, 05:49:36 pm »
Anybody in the Lower Mainland know of a good shop for diff work? I'm in Chiliwack so that would help, or Abbotsford. I had Bob's Driveline recommended to me in Aldergrove by Mopac. IWE Rear Ends Only screwed me big time so I'm not going back.

I see you replied in my other thread under Engine/Drivetrain. Thanks for the kind words. I'd be stoked to have a guy with your skills near me!

I'm out almost $1600 just in money I spent there in parts and labor, not to mention the cost to buy BCAA to get it towed there plus time I took off work. All in all, I'd say this fiasco cost me closer to $2000 just to have a rebuilt posi and a worthless set of gears I have to get redone again. They want me to pay up front for parts and labor for another replacement gear set and THEN hope Yukon says the gears failing were a defect, upon which time the shop would reimburse me for parts and labor. Yeah, right. Very slim chance of that happening and who knows how long it would take. I'm filing a complaint with the BBB at the very least.

Take it to a local garage and have them look at it and document what the problem is so you have proof and take pictures. It sounds like a faulty installation and not a bad set of gears.

Thanks Vile. That might be what could be required as part of the complaint and resolution process. It was so entirely strange how sensitive the new gears were. Any application of throttle say past 1/2 and the they'd get noisy. It was like the oil they used was hyper-sensitive to heat or something. And this was after a good 300 miles of very gentle and short-trip driving was put on them. Very odd. I asked the shop before things escalated if it was possilbe they set the gears up to 12 bolt 'car' specs instead of truck and of course they said 'not a chance.' lol

Sorry to hear that the problem never got solved.
Like I said in your other post I have a set of Yukon 4.10 gears with an Eaton posi in my 14 bolt. The set up has about 3K on it and so far every thing works great.
Have you thought about a complete mail order axle assembly. I know Currie and Strange offer complete bolt in units for muscle cars starting at about $2k.  They offer 12 bolts, Dana 60's,and ford 9 inches. It may be worth a call to see what they offer for your truck.

Thanks for the info Fitz. An entirely new assembly certainly wouldn't be in my budget anymore. So did you follow a break-in procedure with your new gears?

2K is allot to put into your axle after already spending $1600 on it, just thought I'd pass the info along.
Yes,I followed the break in procedure. I work about 18 miles from my house so it worked out great. I'd drive it to work, park it, drive it at lunchtime, home, to the gym. I just took it on a bunch of short back road trips with no highway driving for the first 500 miles (took a week). It was a happy day when I finally got to get on it and smoke the 35"s.
I talked to my friend who set mine up for me about what happened to yours. His guess (without actually seeing it) was that the shop just didn't spend enough time to set it up correctly. My understanding is that you want your tolerances right in the middle of the range, not on the lower or higher ends of the range. He installed my gears/posi with the rear end out of the truck mounted on his workbench. I know he had to assembly/disassemble it a few times playing adding/subtracting shims to get it just right.
Keep us posted on the outcome of yours.
