starters and flywheels
« on: June 10, 2010, 08:54:22 am »
this might be a dumb question but i am baffled. i thought i had my starter prob. fixed (meshed fine, no grinding), but i go out a couple days later to try and start and i get the grinding noise again. it's a 292-6. is it poss. there are diff. starter and flywheel combinations for this engine? difference between a car 292 and a truck 292? thanks for any advice.

it's not loose. i even put in 1/8in. worth of shims and it still doesn't mesh. is it poss. there are different gears on starter, that's why it won't mesh

I emailed them to Chris a few days ago. I'm sure he'll put them in there.

I am going to put them there.  I have been tied up in the evenings getting a 3800 pulled out of a Grand Prix...

there aren't any teeth missing but it is starting to wear down from trying to start it. should i keep shimming? could a starter from a sbc or a bbc work on this engine?  i think my problem is not having the right starter.

there is a difference in the car and pu starters as far as a sb or bb no they wont work i would fork over 40 bucks about to autozone and get one made for your truck start fresh

i did get  the recommended starter and it was grinding on me, got a smaller high torque and it started grinding on me. the p/o swapped out the 454 for this. so i don't know what the 292 came out of and if they swapped parts around.
