Engine knocking
« on: July 07, 2010, 09:14:14 pm »
So I got my truck running and insured about a week ago and on the weekend i was up a mountain 4x4ing with some buddys and my engine started knocking and smelled really bad and was burning oil. So i shut it down and let it sit for a bit and started it and it stopped so got back to my house and by then the noise was going again and it was loud and on the way home the truck randomly stalled on me. I checked the oil and it was really low so i added oil til it was full (4 liters) today and started it and it was fine then once it warmed up the loud knocking came back... Not really sure what it could be, my dad says it could be a crank baring and it doesnt sound like a valve because its a deep knocking and its way to loud. Sooooooooo........ ANY suggestions would help! Thanks!

ps sorry bout the long story lol

Are there metal fillings in the oil? Whats the oil pressure reading?
Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs

Umm im not too sure about that, it didnt seam like it. and oil pressure was reading at first just under half on the guage but when the knocking got loud it was down to under a quarter on the guage. (i think its a quarter) around the first mark, sorta bouncing around there.

drop the oil pan and check out the oil pump and screen...ensure it isn't clogged and as Blazin said, check for shavings.

while the pan is off, check out the rod bearings and main bearings.  Put pressure on the rods and see if any play.

have someone turn the crank at the pulley w/ a 5/8 inch socket.  Watch in from down below.  Try to get a flashlight and check up at the pistons and all bearings.

after a good visual check of bearings and applying pressure and if no problems, put a new pump on it and button it back up and see if that solves the problem.

What would shavings in the oil mean??? Il try all that, il get the oil pan off and see what i can do from there. Is there any way of testing the oil pump?

oil pumps do go bad.  If you go through the trouble of dropping the pan with a noise like that and pressure readings like you explain, might as well put a new pump in.  They aren't expensive.
shavings are just pieces of metal which would indicate too much wear (metal on metal contact) inside the engine = not good.

A deep knocking would indicate a problem sounds like a bearing issue.

Sounds like a rod knock
