81 C10 a/c compressor - R4 unit Convert to A6 or not?
« on: July 20, 2010, 10:42:04 am »
Hello All,,, New guy here, looking for some help.

my quick intro:  2 yrs ago I bought this 81 C10 for a junk hauler for $2200.  I put zero money into it and a yr later it was still running great.  I figured it would be worth an engine rebuild and finally had it done.  Since that time about 6 months ago, I discoverd the huge demand and market for these trucks and I've been so impressed with this 30 yr old vehicle, I am now a hooked for life Chevy C10 fan.

I have 81 C10 Scottsdale w/ 5.7 2wd and R4 model a/c compressor.  a/c is squeeky, drags engine causing stalls, and is generally not useful.  From all I read R4 units are prone to problems.  I want to either convert to A6 model, or replace with a better manufactured R4 direct replacement unit.  Anybody with exp here, your feedback is greatly appreciated.  I'm handy but not exactly a Uber Mechanic man.  Thnx.

No replies so here's the answer to my own question after a few days of research.  Somebody may find this useful.

There is a company out of Tx call oldairproducts.com

Old air products has compressors, brackets, pulleys, & just about everything else need to fit or upgrade your a/c unit.  My old GM R4 compressor can be replaced with a new bracket & a Sanden 510 model compressor.  Compressor, Bracket, accumulator, and orifice tube for a little less than $400.

There is nothing wrong with the R4. If it's squeaky the belt is probably loose or out of alignment or both. The AC is a big load on the engine and will drag the idle down. Is your idle speed solenoid connected?

I have installed at least 50 R4's that didn't come from MB on MB's & never have seen a premature failure!
Here is a good example of that MB crap! The A6 compressor from a MB dealer lists for $2,370!!!! I buy that exact compressor from a GM Delco supplier brand new for $305!! & that includes the clutch.Furnace Replacement Does MB really need to make $2,000 profit on a single compressor?????

I wonder if they're hiring.  I'm in the wrong buisiness.   :o

You can buy Sandens on Ebay, they're a good compressor.  You can also get a compressor from a newer GM truck, they are lighter, smaller and don't drag the engine as much.
