Hood question
« on: August 18, 2010, 11:41:29 pm »
The underside  (or bottom ) of my hood needs some tlc. The support is separating from hood skin , I can see the old factory glue or seam sealer material has failed. The question is what should I use to bond the two back together ???
Thanks in advance Guys..

I would either weld it or steal some of my dads PL400 super adhesive and glue it back on.

Wouldn't weld it for one I honk it needs to flex a little and the heat will burn off any paint on top

Panel bond adhesive?  OEM hoods that I've seen use something similar.  I don't think its seam sealer.

A urethane seam sealer/ adhesive is the right idea. Panel bond adhesive is for joining Two pieces of metal, however this is more for the edges where the panels fit up tight (like around the edges of a door skin, ect). It does not flex very much & can cause distortion during opening & closing, ect. & most likely will come loose from one half in short order for the same reasons. In the areas such as the hood, a trunk or like most cars (& newer trucks) where the outer panel is attached to the inner structure or beam...a urethane sealer/adhesive is the right goop for the job. I hear what your saying.. can you recommend what I or we should use ? Just as a matter of interest I did check into the panel bond from 3m and the applicator gun... wow is that expensive in Canada.. $56.00 for the panel bond + $175.00 for the applicator gun...I gotta find another option so im open to whatever ideas you have..

We welded mine no joke. It didnt burn off the paint on the top. We did repaint the top anyways though just because of a color change. That was just my ONE single experience though.

New hood? Mine is doing the same thing...I was going to fix it but there's a bit of rust on it aswell, so I'm just going to replace it.

The right stuff is not a urethane seam sealer/ adhesive. Did you try it on your hood ?? How well did it bond the two pieces together ??

what about silaprene it's supposed to be for that junk, like door skins and crap and not a panel bonding adhesive as they told me it was. it goes in a normal caulk gun and is a good glue I guess, but don't expect to hold replacement panels in with it without it cracking thru body work.

It's what we call it over here. It's the panel that bolts to the top of the rad core. The hood latching mechanism is bolted to it and the hood "slams" shut on it. I had to separate mine for some rustoration  :-\
