hotwire '85 K15 diesel?
« on: January 05, 2011, 08:06:46 pm »
New to me 1985 K15 4x4 6.2 Diesel... someone tried to steal it from the previous owner, so starter switch is broken and turn signals broken off, dash was messed up as well. He took the dash out and was going to make a custom one but ended up giving up on it and selling me the truck.
truck was running fine, but i have been starting it with a screwdriver (not driving it on the road like that, just running it at home until i can get the new parts swapped in from my donor truck). Anyway, the ignition switch finally came apart and i can't even start it with a screwdriver anymore. Glow plugs are on a toggle switch temporarily so i can still activate them but i can get the starter to turn now...
can anyone tell me how i can hotwire it temporarily? I just want to get it running in order to get it up to my buddies place where we are going to swap in the dash and steering column from the donor truck.
dash is out so i have pretty good access to all the wires, i just don't want to mess anything up...
thanks in advance for any advice...
p.s. Manual is on the way... previous owner is mailing it to me, but i need to get this thing moving asap ;D

Just energize the S terminal wire or pop a used column in it.

the used column is going on after i get it to my buddies place... I usually have to pump the accelerator a bit at startup... is there a way i can put a temporary switch inside? like a push button?

Rent a car dolly.

Or run a wire from the S-terminal like Vile said, touch it to the battery and actuate the accelerator by hand.

If you want to start it from the inside run a longer wire from the S-terminal into the cab, and hook it to a switch if you want to, or just poke the wire in the cigarette lighter to make the starter twist. The same result can be achieved under the hood by taking a short wire with an alligator clip hooked to the S-terminal, you introducing 12v power to it at the battery, and actuating the throttle, manually from under the hood (hitting the go pedal) like I said.

These suggestions are to prevent you from hacking up your existing wiring harness to achieve a temporary result. If this answer is not satisfactory, look in the tech section for wiring diagrams, and hack and splice at your discretion.

You could buy a new ignition switch(meaning the actual electrical portion mounted on the column, that the rod engages) and unplug the broken switch thats on there now and plug in the new switch leaving it hang loose under the column at your knees. Use a dull punch and slide the switch like the rod would and you can start and shut the truck of like it is meant to and not have to cut anything.

do you mean the cylinder? like the part that is broken? if not, what does it look like? Do i need to pull the wheel?
thanks

The cylinder (where you put the key) runs a rod that slides up and down the top of the column and has a 90degree bend at the bottom that sticks up into the electrical ignition switch that mounts to the top of the column down where your knees are. The rod slides the switch to the on position as well as the start or acc. positions. If there isnt anything wrong with this piece than just remove it from the column and work it with a small, dull punch. Of corse you have to drop the column down to access the switch so if your that far into it you may as well just swap the columns?  Either way you can start and shut off the truck from inside and you do not have to hotwire it or cut your harness.

autorepr, that worked perfectly... since the dash is already out, the rod was very easily accessed and i just have a pair of vice grips on it now. Piece of cake. thanks again!
