Charging problem
« on: March 06, 2011, 04:12:32 pm »
I have a 83 k20 that I bought off a 16 year old who didnt have the money to work on the truck.
The alt. is not charging the battery so I looked down at the starter and there is some very creative wiring lots of old eletrical tape with new tape around it multiple splices with wire nuts held off the headers with a piece of pipe.
So,I cut off that mess and now I have it hooked up like this pos bat cable to large stud red wire from alt little red wire from alt and main power feed to truck on large starter stud and purple wire to little stud on starter .
How many wires from the engine harness should go to the large stud on the starter.

What about your fusible links? I've posted the correct schematic many times showing how it should be set up if you search.

from the stud the wire from the stud will go to your distribution block(on the firewall) with a fusible link in between. from there power travels to the starter and back to the battery. Essentially this wire feeds the battery(the long way). btw this wire may skip the dist block or even possibly the starter but this is the typical path.

-with the neg cable disconnected; test continuity from the alt stud to the pos battery post/cable. when you have continuity here you have most likely solved your problem.

to find the problem;
-test cont from the alt stud to the dist block
-test cont from the dist block to the starter
-check fusible links, wires and connections where you find don't have continuity.
-If you need to replace any of the circuit it is important to use the correct size wire and size of the fusible link

Sounds like it should work to me, make sure your wires are in good shape and not spliced together etc, also make they have the fusible links installed. The dist block is not needed.
