starting problems

it could be your starter, but does it turn over slower or not at all? OR it could be ignition or vapor lock too. you have to give us more details.

it turns over like it wants to fire but doesn't catch
i have new starter and battery
and when i turn the truck off after being warmed up the butterfly on my carb stays open intal it cools down

whats the starter have to do with fire. unless its turning over slow

Don't know about yours but my 77 350 had that same problem. It finally stopped starting altogether and it turned out to be the ignition module. It was getting weaker as it warmed up until it quit. Changed it and haven't had a problem since.

When you make a post select new topic not new poll. Your description of what's happening isn't very clear. Which symptom sounds like what's happening:

Engine cranks normally but does not start when warmed up.

Engine cranks slowly resulting in hard start when warmed up.

where do u think the ignition mod would be located on my truck ima have to take a look into that

you just cant look at it most time if the icm goes it will die not, not start when warm tell us what its doing. so we can help before you start spending money on parts you dont need

like ive said im drive the truck around for about 20 min ill shut the truck off and go into the store for about 5 min and come back out to start her but shes turning over real slow and weak, but after she kools down the starter will have enough juice to start right up

see you never said the starter turns over real slow just wont start. but anyway could be just timing is advanced too far or the starter is getting week and the heat aint helping i would go with the timing first since its free to adjust

How old is your battery?

Do you have a stock starter? How old is it?

Does it turn over so slowly that it wont start, or does it start but just turns over slowly?

     Have you checked the teeth on the flywheel.

battery and starter are brandnew and it turns over slowly that it wont start and the flywheel is fine cuz its not skipping, ill check the timing though thanks for all the advice im only 16 so all this is new

the guy we got it from pulled the 350 and put a 305 in we dont know what the motor came out of but the starter is for a 86 elcamino

a starter is a starter unless they are built depending on compression, but i dont think so. someone will confirm or bust it.
