Stock suspension weights.
« on: May 11, 2011, 09:03:22 pm »
I took apart the front suspension from a 78 GMC 1/2 ton today and I had my "good" scale out so I decided to weigh the parts.  This should help out some of you guys who are looking for weight reductions and wondering what's worth swapping out.  I was looking for light weight alternatives for my race truck and knowing what I'm starting with always helps me decide if it's worth replacing.  So here it is.  I hope this helps someone other than myself.

Upper Control Arm - with stock rubber bumpstop, balljoint,  and cross-shaft with stock rubber bushings.
10 pounds and 13 ounces

Stock Coil Spring -
14 pounds and 12 ounces

Stock shock -
3 pounds and 2.5 ounces

Lower Control Arm - with rubber bumpstop, balljoint, and cross-shaft with stock rubber bushings.
30 pounds and 14 ounces

Spindle/Brakes - stock spindle with stock rotor, caliper, 2pads, brake shield, studs and lugnuts.
64 pounds and 2 ounces

Do you really want to know? I can weigh mine since it's out and sitting on the floor.

Sorry about that, I already tossed the crossmember in the storage pile.  I'm planning to see what weight reduction can be done to it soon.  I'd like to be able to knock off 30lbs, but I think that's unrealistic while keeping it safe.  I'm planning to take 20+lbs off each brake/spindle assembly, and possibly find someone to fab me up some lighter control arms.  After that I plan to install a rack&pinion for another 30lbs reduction.  The should put me around my target weight.
