Weird Transmisison Noise
« on: August 22, 2011, 06:56:18 pm »
I'm getting a rattling sound from what appears to be my torque converter.  It sounds like there are marbles in there.  The bolts going through the torque converter to the flexplate are tight and i can't see any cracks on the flexplate.  The truck runs and shifts fine also.  It is a new crate 350 with a TH350 trans behind it in a 85 C10 2wd.  Has anyone heard a noise like this before?  I have a video attached below also.

Tried this tonight and it didn't make a difference in sound.  I'm going to pull the tranny and make sure that the flexplate isn't cracked.  Could a bad transmission pump make a sound like this?

worst case it could be a busted torque convertor nose but you would have fluid all over the place by now

Before you do, Unbolt the coverter from the flexplate and push it back towards the trans. Fire it up and see if the sound changes.

It's been a while since i started this.  Pretty much got frustrated and worked on other parts of the truck...

I unbolted and slid back the torque converter.  The noise didn't change.  I guess that rules out the transmission.  The flex-plate doesn't appear to be cracked from what i can see.  Anybody else have an idea what could be making this noise?  I'm going to double check the torque on the transmission bolts and see it i can pinpoint where it is coming from...

I'm going to pull the trans...  I think it's the flex plate after listening to some similar sounds on youtube.  Should have listened to the first 2 posts.  Hehe.

It really sounds like metal bouncing around.  My guess like others is that a bolt for the torque converter snapped and is stuck bouncing around, or a piece or pieces of the torque converters teeth broke off and are bouncing around.

Sounds like you spun a bearing if no change when you moved the converter back.
