700R4 rebuild... what to ask for???
« on: December 21, 2011, 05:45:12 pm »
OK here's the deal.  Since I have a 700R4 that needs gone through I thought I would put an ad on Craigslist on the barter section and see what would come of it.  If there are any transmission experts out there I need some advice.  I want the right parts/upgrades to make this transmission as bullet proof as possible so here goes.

The truck- My 1985 C30 with a stock 350 engine, currently a TH400 and either a very low rear (supposed to be a 4.56)

I want a transmission that I can tow with if needed.  I want firm shifts but nothing that would chirp the tire under full throttle.  The research of shift kits, shift correcting kits, special this and that is making my head hurt so I am asking those who know to put together everything I would need to do this right.

I haven't looked at the carb or throttle cable bracket to see if it is set up for a TV cable or not.  I am also leaning toward an adjustable vacuum switch for the lock up to get away from the electric unless it is not recommended.  I will have my gear ratio and tire size before I meet the man to make sure I will have the proper speedometer cable drive and driven gears.

Talking on the phone this guy seems to know his stuff but I would like to have a list to hand him that I want done to it.  He is a transmission re-builder of 25 years and can build me one for $600 with a new Torque convertor supposedly and give me a 1 year unlimited mile warranty.  He is about 10 miles from me and said he would adjust the TV cable properly...

Thoughts/insight/wisdom?  Thanks in advance

I had my sons 700r4 rebuilt about 6 months ago. My son can tear up an anvil with a plastic spoon. So the tranny shop put in a  corvette servo, believe corvette valve body, and the "sunshell" was replaced with one called "The Beast". It also has a some type of shift kit.  Its holding up so far and runs great.

I agree with the monster transmission suggestion. Im going to be having monster trans build mine. And besides what they sell, you can email them and ask for special builds. I told one of the techs about my motor, tire size,  front and rear gears , and my intended use of tranny. The tech was great with getting back to me and giving several build options with different prices. I reccomend you look into them.

For what you are doing,

Sunshell, Servo, reprogramming kit, pump modifications, new converter & rebuild kit will get you by just fine.
