SHIFT LINKAGE /HEADER ISSUE...
« on: March 01, 2012, 06:07:07 pm »
Need a little advice. I just put my flowtech on and i took it for a spin with open headers on....sounded awesome, well i'm sure my neighbors didn't think so. The problem is my shift linkage is rubbing on one of the tubes. I reallu don't want to break out the BFH and ding up my brand new headers...Anyone have any suggestions on other ways to get the clearance I need.  350/700r4.

I was just working on my shifter linkage tonight so I know how close this can be.

If you don't want to touch the new headers (and I don't blame you), you may have to modify your linkage a little bit.
You really don't want to modify it too much or you'll mess up the geometry of it. How much it it interfering?

I haven't actually gotten my hands dirty on them yet. I just glanced up behind the rear tire to see wht it was hard to shift.. and thus the problem. Maybe it will be simpler than i'm thinking once i getr into it.

Are you sure you didn't just knock it loose from the frame?

When I had the automatic in mine, I had to straighten the bend in the middle of the linkage rod, and bend the top of it a little tighter and then take up some slack at the slide adjuster on the bottom to get it closer to the firewall. That was with hooker headers.

No I'm not sure if I did or not but when we get out of the hospital I'm going to check and make sure.

Thsi si what I think I will habe to do. It looked like I only have to clear ont tube and that should be easy. I just hope I don't have to take the headers off again...

Got it figured out. It took all of about 3 mins and that includes both attemps. All I ended up doing is slightly bending the linkage that comes out of the column where the rod connects. Just FYI...'87 TBI runns a little rough with open headers even with the os sensor in place. Oh, and of course I took it around the block at 930..sorry to al those living in th eimmediate area of Finley,TN I tried to keep my foot out of it...TRIED!!!

Ok so you busted me...I'm not sorry at all. I love the sound of those open header notes pinging off every house and car as I drove by...oh well.
