New style antenna..
« on: October 22, 2015, 08:14:32 pm »
Has anyone ever used those alternate antennas,  small black box with a stick up side and requires a 12 volt connection?  I sure hope they work.  I hate the windshield antenna.

You mean the shark fin looking ones from newer cars?  I know people that have put them on older cars and they work well

Well, i hooked up the antenna, i couldnt believe it!!  Every station crystal clear, and you'd never even know the antenna was there!   Plus with my mew modern in-dash mono speaker (witch is a bit of an upgrade from the 70's) sounds like i have a Bose system!  Well, almost.    At least no more stupid windshield antenna.

Why do you hate the windshield antenna?

It looked kind of ugly coming out of the dash right where it connects at the base of the window.  Plus poor reception, i need a little more power where i live, very rural.

Yes, most of the online catalog companies have them. I think I got mine from brotherstrucks.com. Also, classicparts.com has them.  (I think brothers was slightly cheaper)  I have not seen them in local retail stores.  avg. price. $39.99

I had several of these trucks when I was younger. As long as the connection at the base of the windshield was good reception was fine.  Very rural central NY state... Northern Chenango county Sherburne, New Berlin, Norwich area.  Schenectady, Utica, Binghampton, and Syracuse AM stations came in fine.

Now that i think of it, my reception problem started when i went back to the original 1977 radio.  Those original radios dont have much power i guess.  But the new antenna IS much better. Oh well..

....and so I thought. Why do stations come in clearer with the engine off. When parked and the key turned back, they come in clear as can be.  Maybe i'll get a new retro style radio all together.  Almost at wits end.

Interference from ignition and charging systems on the truck. I believe they make a anti static box you can plug into the radio to reduce said background "noise" or at least they used too

Why did the cheap aftermarket radio that was in there seem to have much more power and reception?
