what size socket for rear axel nut on a 1979 3/4 ton ?

anybody know what size socket I need to get for the rear end  nut on my 1979 3/4 ton ? I need to pull it apart so I can get to my wheel cylinders .

You need one of the 6 stud type sockets. Most parts stores have them in their rental/loaner program.

thanks , is that all I need to ask them for is a 6 stud socket for my gm truck ?

Which axle nut are you referring to.  The axle nut for the wheel bearings, or the pinion yoke.

Assuming wheel bearings since he's trying to get to his wheel cylinders.

wheel bearing , sorry my fault . my son picked a socket up it only has 4 prongs so hope it works its what the parts store told him so will see . was hoping to get a loner but they didn't have one which I guess in a way was ok since we had crappy weather up here last weekend going to try for this weekend need to get it done its my plow truck !

4 pins are for hub nuts on front axles. 
6 pins are for the 14 bolt hub nuts.
They aren't interchangeable.

You can get them off with a pin punch. Setting the proper bearing preload and not boogering up the slots without the right tool is really kind of difficult.

Sorry, that was my ignorance, I didn't read your post properly.  Yes, you need a Chevy 4WD 6 stud socket
