Cleaning out the cowl versus checking for water leak. Which are you trying to do?

The link posted above shows you how to clean out the cowl. Hunting down a water leak is best done with a flashlight and have an assistant use a garden hose.

3M makes a huge array of seam sealers.  Some can be applied over paint and some require bare metal for proper adhesion.

The "3M 08329 Control Flow Seam Sealer" is what 3M recommends for trunk rain trays and roof gutters.  It flows approximately 1 1/2 inches when applied at a 45 degree angle and cures in around 45 minutes.  Use on bare metal.
The "3M 08308 Heavy-Bodied Seam Sealer" can be used on vertical panels in firewall and cowl areas.  Use on bare metal.

3M 8307 can be applied over painted and sanded surfaces.  It flows out like 8329 and can be painted over but do not use self etching primer.

Are you against using the 3m seam sealer that is in the caulk tubes?

$600 ??? If that's a local price go elsewhere they're fleecing you. Even with the more expensive 3M seam sealer cartridge gun it's right at $100 for the whole shebang

The generic gun for the 3M double barrel mixing tubes is around $35 The 3M gun is around $62...
The 3M Mix tips are around $12.
