Quiz: Test Your Mechanical Knowledge!

Can you answer this question:

You're driving your Chevy 350 5.7 TBI down the road. It's a lovely day outside. Suddenly, your engine loses power. You pull your foot off the gas, press again, and everything is fine. It seems like you were running out of gas, but your tank isn't low. You push the pedal down hard to see if it will rev, and everything sounds great, it revs high and you accelerate. A few minutes later, it does it again -- loses power like the fuel just stopped. Pressing on the gas more doesn't help or do anything. You pull our foot off the pedal, press again, and it's fine. Your fuel pump is only five years old, as is the fuel filter. Your TBI has fuel injectors that are only two years old.

What is causing this?

Pick up coil would be my first thought.

Scan it first, check your TPS, check your fuel pressure, check exhaust backpressure.

I would take a good look at that five year old filter. It sounds like you are getting a reduced fuel flow to your rail. The filter is passing enough fuel to run the engine under idle, or low load conditions, but when you put the boot to it- there just isn't enough fuel passing through the filter to power the engine.

I had the same symptoms just before my ICM pooped out and left me stranded.

At 5 years, the filter is definitely due for replacement.

I would change the fuel filter first. I had something similar to this happen on 2 different TBI set ups. Both of those the fuel sending unit went bad and the vehicle was almost out of gas.

the rubber hose that connects the fuel pump to the fuel pump assembly could be cracked not allowing the proper amount of fuel.

Fuel Filter
