Lug nut and stud Just spins
« on: February 02, 2018, 03:26:45 pm »
Today I figured I’d put my new center caps on. 20min right? Wrong.
One lug stud decided to come loose it appears.
This stud was already replaced prior to me purchasing the truck. 83’ C10 Scottsdale shorty
I finger tightened all the lug nuts and proceeded in the star pattern with the torque wrench starting 30, but at that point it just started spinning.
I think the stud came loose. Now the lug nut is stuck. any ideas how to get it off?
I tried putting pressure on it and using channel locks to get it to go but no luck.

Take all of the other lug nuts off and use the wheel to apply outward pressure. Use your impact to zip it off and reset the stud.

Do yourself a favor and invest in an impact gun. If you don't have a compressor you can buy a cordless one or even an electric one. You can try or just take it to a shop, they'll probably fix it for under $50 bucks.

Try a grinder. Do one side, then spin a half turn and do the other. Pry it out as far as possible. You need a new stud anyway. After grinding both sides of the nut, a hammer and chisel should finish it off.

How? I dont have much room to get to the stud. Or do you mean just grind the nut, basically damaging the lug nut?

think thats going to depend on your lug nuts. cant see the video but one you get the wheel off measure another lug and see how much you can see sticking out of the hub or the threads then go to the local parts store and compare it to what they have

Sounds good... ordered a dremel will use this to remove the dang thing.
For the cost of parts and my time it’s probably cheaper going to a shop 🤣🤣

well considering the stud and lug are hardened youll have a heck of a time with a dremel. i know my dad years ago when i cross threaded a stud took a socket and extension and jumped on it a few times to break the stud.

I've had this happen, I removed the axle and welded the stud to remove the nut.

I figure I may be able to get enough clearance to get at the stud to use the dremel. If not I’ll just snap it like you said. Thats was my neighbors suggestion, get a bar on it and jump to snap it.
Ill give it a go post back..

Just to update. I removed the stud by getting a socket and my breakerbar, thought the breaker bar would break, it didnt. Proceeded going up and down until the nuts thread basically flattened and it slid off. The stud didnt break. Then another stud had to replaced as the nut on that one was stuck as well, squealed like a pig coming off. They are stripped as heck...
I may just replace all of them since I am at. Will also replace the shoes on both rear wheels.
