air filters compare to your nose hairs. they don't stop everything just the big dust particles.

Air filters protect your engine from intaking dust, its already been proven mask dont do this as they dont create a perfect seal around your mouth.

Interesting question, and fairly simple answer. I personally run an air filter on all my engines. However, if the engine complained about it or it restricted the intake I would probably reassess the situation. And most importantly, if the government started mandating my old Chevy trucks be driven everywhere with an air filter I would object. Not the government business whether I use an air filter or not. My engine, my air filter.  Can you imagine not being allowed to park on the street or a parking lot until someone popped your hood and inspected for filter? That would be ridiculous....

I'll add that the filter is a ONE WAY device...face diapers are not and catch and hold all kinds of gunk.
