Does anyone know what correct carrier bearing and whether there is an appropriate rubber boot?

I'm in the process of replacing the carrier bearing and it looks to me like there should be some sort of boot to cover the open spline.

The u-joints are spicer 1350 series (1.188 OD x 3.63 end to end) and the carrier bearing is 1.574 at the bearing with a 1.500 dia spline.

Its a 1979 K30 with SM465 transmission and a 454 that was swapped in, also its got 4.56 gears.

I'm going through the dana / spicer catalog and theres a handful of these (carrier bearing) that come up under style 15 with 1.574 ID, 6.62 bolts to mount and 2.25 dim from bottom to bearing center... but they have different front slinger / rear slinger. If those are the pieces on the end, then I want to replace them if I can.

For so much undercarriage rust, the cab seems to be in solid condition!

If the number Vile gave you is a O'Ry number and they don't have one, ask them for the full OEM or aftermarket part number equivalent.

That will be the key to finding it, because they (other parts stores) can then cross reference other brands.

You'll have a list of Brands/Part # to look for, if not local, then on the Internet.

Hope it goes well, we love hearing about it.

VileZambonie:
I can certainly give that a try I'm in southern NH and there are plenty of O'Reilly in my area. I'm planning to go there at some point to borrow a bearing puller since that bearing won't come off easily.

That part probably is a good fit, I'd just have to verify the 2.25 dim from base to center.

Do you know if this driveshaft would normally have a rubber boot covering the splines? I wouldn't think that this would be left unprotected but at the same time I'm not sure the joint was designed for this. I tried scouring the internet looking for pictures and driveshaft boots certainly exist but I have no idea if such a thing exists for this configuration.

Anyway the spline is pretty rusty in the couple inches that are exposed and it'll still certainly work fine. Its just that I would be kicking myself if I reassemble and then later realize I left something out.

JohnnyPopper:
The frame is generally solid too. I'm in the process of replacing the cross member. And so I'm going to repaint the frame before the new cross member is installed. Well, I got that started and now I plan to put a coat of paint and new ujoints and bearings on the driveshaft too. Not to mention that I've got to replace the bed as well. I am looking for a flatbed or dump body but don't have a replacement lined up.

Yes, the cab is in pretty good shape. I'm replacing the cab mount bushings too and was pleasantly surprised to find that the weld nuts in the frame are still in tact.

As to getting full OEM part numbers from auto parts stores I'll try that.

Thanks for the comments. I will keep you posted.

I didn't realize that was there, thanks for pointing it out. I've got a reprint of the 1979 service manual but that's it.

I don't think that there is a boot designed for this. I think all I can do is apply paint.

Anyway, I made the trip to orielly auto... I brought home 6053 and I'm trying to confirm its the correct before I open it.

The only difference between the 6038 and 6053 are the slingers and they did not have a puller with the length needed to pull the bearing so I'm going to cut the old rear slinger and I'm thinking I'll be able to hammer the old bearing off.
