No you will need 4" to fit 35"s as far as your 1/2 ton being able to handle mudding well that depends on how bad you beat the crap out of it. You will need drop brackets for the front brake lines/hoses, longer shocks, a steering arm would be good, you can drop your transfer case down 1" and you're driveshafts should be fine. If you go 6" you will definitely need to not only pitch the rear axle but have your driveshafts sent out.

The transfercase crossmember bolts have spacers on them above the frame. I usually just place them between the frame and the crossmember.

or check ebay sometimes there's good deals but they'll whack you on the shipping

4" will clear 35's but 6" will clear better with no clearance issues at all. i don't recommend the transfercase drop because it puts strain on your transmission because your only dropping the rear. if you go 6" you can just make up for it in the longer drivelines. I have 6" lift on my 79' and it does great in mud, that little extra clearance is nice in mud and water crossings. I payed under 1k w/out wheels and tires. as for soft ride systems, with a solid axle you'll ride rough with or without a lift. i would only go full spring lift if your worried about a smooth ride. add-a-leafs and blocks only make your ride worse

You can definitely cut the fenders to make room for them, but you are going to be cutting alot if you don't lift it.

you can get information from lift kit manufactures to see about driveline modifications. this is not every kit but i have seen quite a few 4" lift kits that require NO driveshaft mods. you cannot fit 35" tires with no lift no matter how much fender trimming. with a 4" and trimming you could have 35's and still keep the pizza delivery functionality and still look good.

The last 4" kit I installed cleared 36" tires without rubbing.  The kit came from Jegs and was an EZ-Ride type.  I payed 325 or so for the kit and it came with just about everything.  I opted to spend the extra 90 bucks for longer breaklines as mine stretched a bit in turns.  There wre no driveline mods required at all and I would reccomend the transfer case drop if you can find one.  The rubber motor mounts will keep everything from binding or snapping.  I was in your shoes... no money and tires that did not fit.

The transfer case drop kit is not going to strain your transmission. The engine, tranny, and tcase all pivot as one unit on the motor mounts. If you go any higher than a 4 inch lift you have to drop your tcase or you will eat through ujoints like crazy. If you are really on a tight budget just do a shackle flip kit in the rear and either re-arch your front springs or buy new lifted front springs to match the rear. (Usually about 1 inch higher unless you want a rake job). Shocks are a must and brake lines and sway bars must be addressed with anything over 4 inches, as well a drop pitman arm. A 4 inch lift with 35s are still going to rub and need some clearancing. A 6 will clear no problem but then you have to lengthen your drive line.
