suggestions for stereo purchase
« on: November 14, 2007, 07:10:28 pm »
Ok I'll be getting new stereo and speakers soon and would like some suggestions.

what receiver would you suggest for $100-$130?
what 6x9s would you suggest for $100?

I will probably put the 6x9s in boxes behind the seat.
I'm guessing there is some kind of factory speakers in the dash that I can replace?  what size are they?

I have a 79 gmc 1/2 ton 4x4

A Sony or Pioneer Deck. And Diamond Audio 6x9's and the dash speakers are the 3.5" round ones. Although you might have the center speaker as well, which i have no idea what size it is.

A high quality Kenwood, Pioneer, or Sony deck should be perfect, and the 6x9's should be any 3-way you can find that is over 50 but less than 80. I used to work at a stereo shop and know the acoustics of our cab are best suited for the 3-ways. I was absolutely impressed with this minimal equipment in my truck, just because I knew the proper setup and placement:

$20 Wal-Mart no name CD deck
$30 Lightning Audio 3-way 6x9's in $10 boxes

Everything was bought at Wal-Mart for less than $70 and sounded beautiful!

I'd save money and broaden my budget for the headunit..Kenwood is decent, Pioneer is decent, but Eclipse is the way to go. Lower return rates, better sound quality, and Eclipse is in the affordable range these days.

Why upgrade the stereo if you're going to use crappy Wal-mart brand stuff. I would budget at least $300 for all 4 speakers and a deck. Go check out the stuff overn on www.onlinecarstereo.com...They carry name brand stuff at cheap a** prices.

$300 is about my budget for all this, just want suggestions on name brands.  It's been a long time since I've purchased stereo equipment.

I was thinking a Pioneer deck, but what brands of 6x9 does everyone like?  I'm a big fan of bass but don't want to buy a sub and amp.  One of my friends had some Cerwin-Vega 6x9s and I thought the lows were exceptional.  What do you all suggest for 6x9s used for a lot of rap/hip-hop?

For rap or hip hop? I suggest a sledge hammer  ;D

6x9s blow. Get some truck boxes and stuff some 12"s or 10"s behind the seat. You can get a good amp cheap then just run some 6.5"s in either the doors or kick panels and a set of tweeters in the dash. If you're on a cheap budget then Wal-mart is your place to go lol

Don't forget ebay   You can get some good deals there for the money you are looking to spend. I have bought allot of stereo equipment from people both new and used.New Kenwood decks for around $100 shipped and decent speakers between $50-100 for a good set.I currently have around $400 in my stereo (all from ebay) and it is over 1000 watts.

I spent $500 on the set-up in my Mazda3 and it puts most bigger systems to shame, and I'm only pushing 500W.

85mudster....  of course you did !  take the size of a mazda into consideration,  never compare the internal volume of a lincoln town car vs. an escort when it comes to sound system....  its ovious that our chevy's will fill up with a small economical system $200 - $300 or $500. > but the problems is what will fit into the very reduced space this trucks have. I know there is a post already but if anyone have updated pictures(newer) of chevy system setups .......... please post!  "we need ur ideas."

I was just trying to make that point that you can but GOOD cheap stereo equipment without buying CHEAP stereo equipment, I personally would never buy audo equipment from Wal-Mart it just seems wrong to me somehow...maybe It's just me.

BTW, I have the equipement I'm putting in my truck already, minus sub and amp, I don't listen to rap and it's a truck. But I'll take pictures of it after I put it in tomorrow (It's cold (like 40°) out and I'm a wimp.)

???
You don't have to listen to rap to have subs.I listen to everything from old school country to death metal ,I think that most music sounds better with subs. You just have to adjust it to your preference.I am currently putting my system into my new Blazer and it consists of a Kenwood deck, kenwood 3.5 dash speakers,a set of kenwood 2way 6x9's all running off the deck, and 2 10in Kenwood subs pushed by a 800 watt amp.(I'm a bit of a Kenwood nut ;D)Like I said before I picked all of it up on ebay for less than $400 !!!  If your budget is around $300 you could buy a smaller amp.Now I'm not saying you have to install subs, that is just the way I like it.
I'm just throwin out some ideas and what I have done.I'll get some pics. up soon of my install.
