Balancer / timing
« on: January 13, 2008, 04:39:41 pm »
Ok...86 k10 V6.
No timing tab...But i no ware it goes..and when i shine a timing light in that spot ...Cant find the mark..But when i go to the passanger side i can see the mark..So what would make the Timing mark be on the wrong side of the engine..And what are the steps to get it back in place...cause im pretty sure ill have to do something like take it off...Get the engine to TDC and then put it back on with the line facing straight up?

Get to TDC and use a white paint marker and your tab to mark a new 0 degree mark.

So your saying i dont have to move the balancer...All i have to do is get to TDC then mark a white line on the top of the balancer?

That's the way I understand it.  When I installed my new balancer, my timing pointer did not line up with the timing mark on the balancer.  I just ordered timing tape from summitt and put the engine at TDC then lined the 0 degree mark of the timing tape to my timing pointer.

Havn't fired it up yet because I am still wiring it - but that's how I did mine.  I don't know why the new balancer didn't line up.  Maybe someone here can enlighten us.

Is the balancer on either of these Old?  Is the pointer the correct one for the balancer?
If it is old it is possible that the outer ring slipped.  There is no way to "move" the balancer since it is Keyed onto the crankshaft.

With the piston #1 at TDC where is the mark on your balancer pointing? Is the timing tab behind the waterpump looking straight down?

Well its old....Im pretty sure it slipped...timing mark can only be seen with timing light ..on the passanger side of truck...When it should be seen on driver side...So ill take it to TDC then make a new mark at 0 degres And go from there....Right? or am i so far off I'm sinking?

Put the engine to TDC #1 cyl. Mark the balancer where the groove is and make a mark on the timing cover or tab where it is.  There's your zero mark for now.

If I may piggyback redneckchevy....

I have a new 8" balancer.  Balancer timing mark is bteween 12:00 and 1:00 oclock position.  The timing pointer is behind the power steering pump on the timing cover.  I suspect the pointer is wrong?  If it is, which one should I have?  The one on there now is what was on my old 350 that I took out.

I'll post pics shortly.

Your timing tab should be more off to the right...Like this...

My pointer is the teeth kind that shows (0 degree)TDC where yours does, but my balance has the mark at about 18 degrees before TDC.  This is the one I have:
