350 to a 327
« on: March 31, 2008, 04:28:05 pm »
would it work to put a 327 crank in a 350 block and then have a 327? i thought i read that it would work and i also thought i read the 307 crank is the same as a 327 crank? i figured it would work since a 350 and 327 both have 4 in bores but im no mechanic so i thoughti'd ask :P

The pistons aren't the same, so you would need them.
Also there are 2 types of 327 cranks.  small and large journal.  All 350's are Large Journal (as are 307's)

To add to what the Capt. said. The '68 & '69 327's are the large journal ones (same as the 307). The ones '67 & earlier to that were small journal. Lorne

Just did this job.  The pistons are different as are the balancer and timing cover, other than that the rods and everything else will all swap.  It revs quick, just keep it in a half ton, not quite enough low end for a 3/4 or 1 ton.

An old friend of mine did that and ran it with dual quads in a '55 chevy and ran high 10's. That thing freaking screamed.

Trust me, they do scream.  They just don't pull quite so well on the low end as a 350 or a 383, but they are still a very good engine.

327's work well for offroad racing with your transfercase in low range and a set of 4.56 gears... I don't think I'd like one for streetability though

From experience I can definitely second that one.  Don't get me wrong it was very fast, it just did not have enough to make me comfortable with a heavy trailer behind it.  If you are going to play in the mud it would befine for that, but it is more economical to build a 350, you pay half as much and have twice the motor.

as long as you don't need it for a lot of low end power, go for it.  if you need to move heavy loads then i'd stick with something with more low-end grunt.  it depends on what you do with your truck...
