'86 Silverado Multifunction Switch Replacement Information
« on: September 28, 2008, 05:42:53 pm »
I have an '86 Silverado and I decided to replace the multifunction switch.  This truck has a tilt column.  I thought it would be simple.

I'm pulled the steering wheel, lockplate, etc. but I don't see how to get the darn switch mechanism out without screwing something up.   The new multifunction switch is actually the lever used for turn signal, etc.  There's likely a C clip holding it in.  It appears that if you could take the cover off the back side of the multifunction switch that you could get to everything needed but I can't figure out how to do it without messing it up.

I have a Haynes manual but it is of little help.  Thanks for any advice you can lend or any website material you can link me up with.

Are you trying to replace the turn signal switch or the wiper stalk?

The wiper stalk.  The lever that sticks out of the steering column that has the cruise control button, delay wipers, mist, etc. on it.

Put it in the off position and pull it straight out. Fish the wire for the cruise up and out of the column with a piece of mechanic's wire. Pull the new one back through and stick it in.

You mean that there are no c-clips or anything holding that sucker in?  Darn.  Thanks, man.

Thanks for the tip on the wiper stalk R&R.  That is correct.  Any suggestions on snaking the cable.  Darn, it's not easy.  I got it through the column once but snaked it through the opposite side and the cable wasn't long enough.  So, I had to pull it out and start over.

Is there a way to remove the plastic cover that's behind the wiper stalk?

Not without removing the locking clip which is spring loaded. There is a special tool that pushes the plate down to allow removal of the clip. It is possible to do without but is better done with the tool.

Here is a most excellent thread on disassembling, rebuilting the tilt column and installing all related components.
