dash tachometer
« on: October 08, 2008, 11:34:44 AM »
I have a 79 chevy stepeside that I am working on.  I found a guage cluster out of a 76 or 77 1 ton that had a factory tach and a small gas guage.  I cannot get the tach to work.  I have several tachometers and I cant get any of them to work.  I am using am using a stock HEI.

I have the factory tach wiring harness and it has some kind of condesor that plugs in to the wires that goes from the tach to the guage, but the wires are broke off on side of it so i didn't us it.  Has anyone else installed a factory tach in their truck and ran in to any problems?

Thanks in advance,
Joe

Well most of the factory tachs were garbage and broke so yours probably doesn't work anyway.

Not really sure what you are saying is broken but if the gauge has broken parts that go to the tach I wouldn't count on it ever working.

If you flip the cluster over the leads for the tach are clearly marked on it.
A 76-77 cluster is not the same as a 78-80 cluster.  The 76-77 version has a mechanical oil gauge on it.
FYI- I have probably swapped about 10 of these out.

Where?  If it is Covan's Avoid it, they are surface mount and they lack structural support.

Looks like someone modified factory gauges.  Never heard of them.

^ That's an interesting product. From what I understand of reading the auction, the gauges are new and they put the faces and needles on to match the year that your truck is. And, they wire the tach independently (like any universal tach) so that anybody can wire it in regardless of your year or cluster. It looks like they take the factory printed circuit board right out of the equation.

Tachs don't use the printed circuit, the have a lead that comes straight off to power/coil/ground.

Sorry to bring this up again, I remember seeing the auction when it was current.  I googled gm sports with no luck.  Anyone happen to have a link?

This is their website:
http://gmsportssalvage.com

This is their ebay store (AFAIK)
http://motors.shop.ebay.com/merchant/gm_sports

BTW, I also have found The Tachman can fix the 73-75 tach along with the 76-up versions

http://gmsportssalvage.com/?q=node/1530  in case anyone is interested...  This is the one I want.  Won't have to ditch my quartz clock and the gas gauge is right there...

Looks like a nice tach/gas gauge and would fit right in with the stock gauges but its a little pricey.

Did you notice it said "Chevy and GMS trucks", I have never heard of a GMS truck.
