I didn't know they made explorer's back then.  :P

Did you over oil the filter?

What makes you think it's lean?

K&N has very good customer support.  I had a question regarding the correct size of filter required for my truck and got an answer back the next day.

In this case, the link to this FAQ might resolve the problem.

Good luck.

I dont understand how the filter will make it run lean, the ecm should compensate for the added air flow. Check to make sure you don't have any leaks i the air duct after the MAF sensor. If more air is getting in than what the Mass airflow sensor is reading, then it will not know to richen up the fuel. A dirty airflow sensor will do the same.

First thing to do is make sure you didn't contaminate the MAF sensor with that K&N and make sure like choptop said NO leaks between the MAF sensor and the throttle body. If everything checks out ok look for a vacuum leak next.

If you over oil your K&N it can get on the wire. Take the MAF sensor out and clean it with rubbing alcohol. Make sure it is dry before you put it back in.

I have also seen MAF sensor cleaning spray in several autoparts stores. Be careful, the sensor components themselves are very fragile
