opinion on fuel pumps?

previous owner took mechanical fuel pump off and installed a 40$ electrical fuel pump from the local auto parts store. should this be replaced or is fine for now? i have a filter and regulator on also set at 5.5 psi. edelbrock carb, thanks

If it's wired correctly and you are happy with it then leave it.

Hypothetical here;

suppose it is in a wreck.  The engine stops, but, if the pump is simply wired to the ignition where it runs when the key is on, the pump may continue to flow the gas to the engine. Next thing you know there is gas all over the engine compartment.  A simple spark and......

I know that on our Ford Crown Vic Police cars, if the car is involved in a slight bump or tap, sometimes the engine stops.  The electric fuel pump switch located in the trunck must be reset. this is a safety feature.

I don't know how our fuel injected chevys are, or how they are wired for safety to prevent this. 

Just thought I'd throw this out there.

Good point. Also, hypothetical: A cut fuel line below the tank level will act as a siphon regardless of the pump running or not.

What are we going to do? It's got to stop somewhere, or you end up with a truck that requires an engineering degree to work on.

Wait til you see the innards of the Hybrids, electric, and H2ice etc lol

You can easily wire up a safe electric fuel pump system.

How? I guess wiring when the starter solenoid was getting power and when the alternator was putting out juice would be the best. That way, if you ain't driven in a wee while it'd fill the bowl when you're trying to start the thing and then the pump wouldn't run when the truck was off because the alternator stops putting juice out? But how would that work? Sorry to hijack.

Chevy put the gas tank in a terrible place on these trucks (there have been all kinds of studies and even TV Specials on impact explosions because of tank location) -- no point in making it worse than it already is!   :o

I remember that ABC story...they set it up with explosives to make it look dramatic. The got burned for it, pardon the pun.

There was a class action law suit anyway against GM.  The result?--something like a gift certificate for a hundred bucks off a new chevy.    ::)

i installed a holley elec. pump bout a year ago now. no relay and ran off the ignition with no problems as of yet lol.
