pinion nut and crush sleeve

I have been told that if your pinion nut is loose you can just retorque it to 125 ft lbs and it will be fine. Just wondering why the crush sleeve wouldnt need replaced? thanks

The crush sleeve is "crushed" to tolerance. so yes you can retorque it.  If it was loose for a while though, think about the bearings.

I don't know where you got that torque spec but no that is not correct. Bearing preload is measured by rotating the pinion gear at the yoke with the differential carrier removed using an inch lb dial type torque wrench. a small beam torque wrench can also be used. 15-25 in lbs is ideal. If you have to replace a pinion seal make a witness mark on the location of the nut to the pinion shaft and the companion flange using a punch. If the nut is too loose kiss your ring and pinion goodbye. If it's too tight kiss your bearings goodbye.

I went down to the gmc dealer and a gm tech of 30 years gave me that torque spec. I didnt think to ask him why the crush sleeve wouldnt need replaced

I went back to the gmc dealer and asked about the torque specs and he told me approx 125lbs trq on the pinion nut was not enough to crush the sleeve anymore but it was tight enough to hold things tight and to pull the pinion up to approx the set point it had prior to coming loose in most cases.

Well he's wrong unfortunately. Once the collar is crushed it's crushed. You might want to pull it apart and see why it loosened up in the first place.

Its more common than you may think for them to come loose. Just do a search on google. You will find alot of hits.

i know i haven't seen everything before,but Ive been in the automotive business since i was 14(first job was at a parts store)and have been at the dragstrip since i was born and i have never seen that happen,unless whomever put it together did a half-done job
