6.2 L Diesel
« on: February 11, 2009, 06:23:53 am »
I have looked everywhere.  I found the gauges I like at Autometer but my question is with the diesel.  My cluster has Large Fuel Gauge next to the speedo and a blank place for a gauge on the left side.  I thought about a tach in place of the fuel and put a fuel in the blank.  From what I see, I can not find a tach for my diesel.  If I can not get one, what can I put in the 5 inch hole on the right of my speedo?

any thoughts?

Thanks

so any tach I get I can hook to the alternator?

here is the instructions for the one I want
http://autometer.com/productPDF/1185.pdf

It says to hook to coil or to a tach terminal for an electronic ignition.  Will it work?

I'm jumping in to this thread as I want to do the same as you - replace the 5" fuel gauge on a 6.2 diesel, with a tachometer.

Now, gasser engine tachs work by inductive pickup from the ignition...obviously, that's no good for a diesel. Also, a gasser tach, typically, goes up to 7 or 8000 RPM...for a diesel, that will look silly of the needle never gets past 3000 RPM
But then, after much browsing, I found that Dakota Digital have an adaptor unit that will convert the output pulse from the alternator W/P Terminal so that any gasser tach can be used. It costs US$65 and can be seen
http://www.dakotadigital.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=product/product_id=128/category_id=311/home_id=59/mode=prod/prd128.htm

Aftermarket diesel tachs run from an inductive pickup strapped around the alternator, usually. Autometer is the only brand I can find and the gauge is just 3.5" diameter. Of course, you could pull the 5" tach from a scrap GM HD truck but how these connect, where you had no tach before, I don't know.

Then there's the LCD digital 'TinyTach' - which has a pickup around an injection line for sensing - but I don't think it would look as good. and is a 3" x2" rectangle.

BTW - did you ever see these links?

Adrian,

It will be a while before I can get to this point so I will cross that bridge when I get there.  There is a specific set that I want for my truck and I have seen the post on recessed and surface mouting the guages.  I will be doing the recessed when I get to that point.  Thanks for the like to the adapter.  I think that might be my best bet...maybe...if I don't find a better option.

Bringing this thread back from the dead...  You may want to check out The Dieselpage.  Lee Swanger came up with a relatively simple circuit to drive a gas engine tach off the ESS sensor on the 6.2 vacuum pump.

Problem is, that's a 'pay per view' part of the site for paid members only...anyone have the article they can PM me?
