You can get away with the 315/60 15 or the 325/50 15, both are 11" wide tread. Mickey Thompson doesn't reccomend it, but I ran the 325/50's on an 8" wheel for a couple years. They looked a bit "balloony", but wore ok. Lorne

hmmm, that statement is a little weird. 315 and 325 is the width of the tire... My 325's are 12.9" wide (That's what the website shows, if you do the math, it's 12.79. 315 would be 12.4).. The width doesn't change based on the other numbers, just the height....

I have a set of 325/50r15's and they're about 12.5" wide

Two tires of the same exact size can be different by a few millimeters

A few millimeters definitely, but not almost a couple of inches like he's saying.

The tires won't be that wide when you mount them on 8" rims.  They'll shrink to around 11.5 section width and tread width is narrower yet, so he's probably pretty close.

Well tire width and track width is separate.....so yea the tire could be 12 inches wide but be so ballooned its truck width could be maybe 10 inches. Track width is more or less the amount of the tread contacting the pavement....

You can't shrink the width of tread.... Putting them on 8" wide rims just pulls the sides in and screws up the contact patch. And then what's the point of having wider tires if you aren't using it all? Might as well use proper wheel and tire fitment. The only reason you'd want to do that is so you can run much lower air pressure for the track and get the contact patch back to normal. Which isn't 11" on a 325 tire.

Well Jeff, I clearly stated tread width not section width which is what the 315 or 325 numbers mean. I mentioned the 315's because if he is hunting a BIG (both wide & tall) the 315/60 is about 2" taller than the 325/50.
As mentioned, tires from different companies or even just a different type of tire can have a different width (especially tread width) even though they have the same xxx number on them. Is there some 325's that have more than 11" of tread width?...I don't doubt that a bit.
Here is the Mickey Thompson ET Street radials that are on my truck today (mounted on 10" wheels) fairly new with 33 psi in them sitting in the driveway.

Here is an old one that is "squared off" a bit after 100 passes or so & a bunch of miles

I don't have any of the 315's to measure, however both Summit & Jeg's list them in the newest catalogs as being 11" tread width also. Is the one a 1/4" different in width than the other? probably.
I stand by my original unedited post. Lorne

I know what the numbers mean  ;). Overall width is more accurate with 325 (like I said, do the math and you will see that 11" is 280mm) and not just the tread width. For fitment, overall width is what has to be known more then tread width. But oh well, they fit and that's all that matters.

I had Hoosier qucktimes in 325/50R15's and they were almost an inch wider than the same size BFG drag radials.

yea that is a regular problem. Different manufacturers measure their tires differently. If you are wanting to buy, it's better to over compensate.
