If you want to get grease off and don't care about the finish of the part afterwards.  Easyoff is your friend...

you can use it on chrome in short spells. just can't let it SIT on there forever. rinse off and if needed you can repeat.

there was this stuff i got from a Harley shop years back called "Pig Snot" that was an AWESOME chrome cleaner.  when i first got my '72 Super Beetle it had chrome rims on it that were rusted pretty badly...once i got done with that stuff and a lot of elbow grease you wouldn't ever know they were rusted...i mean, if you looked CLOSE enough you could see pits in some places, but from a distance they looked like new rims...

today's mess...

pretty much finished taking the bolt ons off to get it cleaned for paint. intake, fuel pump, etc. grabbed like ten bucks worth of easy off, sprayed on, blasted it with the pressure washer, and it's clean. i'm going to do it one more time tomorrow as some tiny spots had some grease run into it. and i got lazy and didn't feel like fighting with the hose on my fuel pump.

friend of my brother's wanted a hat airbrushed, so he came over with a bag full of cheap chrome accessories from like, auto zone.
i'm not complaining.

only thing is i was trying to avoid chrome now with the black and flat silver i think the chrome will look retarded.

i don't know if i'm gonna like the flat black, silver and chrome. i'd rather just go with a dull satin finish... does anyone know of a way to scuff this stuff to take the chrome shine down? if i get the time i'm gonna pinstripe a few things... or have a friend of mine do it if i don't do it myself... thought about pinstriping all the inside stuff, firewall, etc

used the easy off and scrubbed with a steel brush... lol.

after letting it sit for a day while i drank myself stupid, i did the easy off and pressure washer again. after such, i easy offed AGAIN and hit it with a brand new grill brush, to make sure that i got everything off. brush stayed blue everywhere i scrubbed, so moved on to blast it for the last time. then i just easy offed the engine bay, basically repeating the same steps. we'll probably pull the front end off tomorrow. there seems to be some kinda textured crap on my firewall around all the bolt holes, etc. feels like rhino liner or some kinda spray on liner. will this sand off? if all goes well tomorrow and i get the clip off, it's next to degrease again and prep the engine bay for paint, as well as sealing the frame with a rust preventative my jobber suggested instead of por15. so wish me luck i'm going dummy on this...

yes, i did go back in and pull the hose off my water pump. lol going satin black and silver. not sure how this is gonna look with all the crhome crap i got but we'll see i guess. i already used high heat primer on everything before using the satin black i top coated it with...

late start today cause i was laying in bed watching power block in an effot to actually LEARN something..

figured i'd swap all the duct work over for the ac while i wait for the new evaporator case to come. so that meant, yeah, i was going to cut something and screw it up. which i did. but it's not THAT bad. lol.

pulled the front clip off to find more rust than i thought was initially there, fine, replace it later. now i might just wait on spraying the firewall since those parts need replaced anyway. save my time and money this month unless sem comes thru and sponsors my little project like always.

made a carbooard templatre of the ac firewall, and used it to cut the on ac. which i still got it a little bit off, and after a couple hours and not having the extra hands i needed to hold the bugger in place i just got pissed and hacked out a chunk. figured we'd weld it back later when i closed off the hole for the non ac blower.

i was a little bit off, but the duct work went in and lined up with teh defroster, so that wasn't needed. the rest were. only thing pretty much left to do is bolt everything in place and swap out the control now it's kinda just in place for the time being while i wait on that missing part.

for a cheat sheet, i downloaded vintage air's non ac kit directions, and just mapped out what i did and didn't need as i went along. they have a check list on there, so it went pretty smoothly.

so here's the story. i bought a 79 silverado last year. the motor blew. i know nothing abut cars or trucks, so i had to rely on my stepdad's oh so expert redneck knowledge when i bought this thing. long story short, it was all olds crap under the hood, and now after a lot of swearing and cursing people for dead, i bought another 1980 for parts to harvest. air conditioning, suspension, the bed etc. my cab and frame weren't rusted too bad which was my major concern.

slowly as we pull things apart we're finding more and more things to address but all in all still not TOO bad. only i tore everything apart to replace what was rotted, and now my stepdad renigged and won't put it together even after he got his helmets painted etc, which was the agreement for trading him paint work for him to put the truck together. which all he had to do was get the motor in and running, i can bolt body panels on and have somoene else weld any metal that needs replaced.

i got this a year ago. so now since the bed's off, i'm going to start the por15 or something similar, if anyone can recommend the frame. i got the firewall cut and the ac components under the dash, which was a task. all the extra vents, and making sure i cut it right even after i measured 10 times and made a cheater template i still managed to cut a little too much. but that's what welders are for.

the inner and outer fenders are trashed. so i got brand new ones. i wanna swap everything over from the other one over to the truck i'm keeping. so i'm basically doing this all via stuff i can find from the internet, and pics of what i did when i took it apart. for the ac swap i found some aftermarket kit for ac, and downloaded their instructions, which worked. the motor's in, but not hooked up it's just sitting on the motor mounts so nothing else has been bolted in. i'm trying to take the right steps for stopping rust on this thing now while i'm putting new parts on it. i want it to be nice, but i am going to drive it.

question is, now my so called radiation brain cannot remember how to prep stuff. the metal comes with that black coating on it, what primer should i use to put on this when i get the new fenders monday? i'm thinking just solid black, nothing too fancy. i'm back and forth between my gram's garage and my mom's where the trucks are parked. so i'm painting and prepping in the driveway most of the time. so house of kolor black since i have a ton of it is what i'm thinking to use. solid, so there's no need for worrying about color not matching, can i just spray everything piece by piece?front end is all disassembled and in my garage now, so i figured why not?

any suggestions would be great. i noticed that eastwood has rust encapsulator cheaper than por15, so i'm weighing time vs money with everything i do on this.i'd rather not waste time if it's not going to cost me an arm and a leg. i see that i can spray on the por15, but read there's a few different ways to thin it out to spray.

any recommendations suggestions, etc. or feel free to tell me i screwed something up totally. i'm going with what i can find on the internet, my manual, and with the maps i made for myself photographing every single bolt i took off when i tore this down.

well theres a hole lot of that around here. but anyway the back coat on your parts is primer i think at least lol. as long as you keep your measurements the same on the paint it should match up pritty good

ok today's progress which wasn't much. pulled the radiator support apart a bit, started to use the stuff i ordered online from por15.. followed the stesp...

as i was grinding some of the rot in the corner, a small hole appeared. as much as i hate to be ghetto i am not buying another rad support. so i'm using some jb weld quick stick to fill in the hole. then some metal filler to smooth it out. i ordered a pint of it, which from now on i'll use the other stuff. the kbs kit is the same price but i think comes in a quart rather than a pint and ends up being like $5 cheaper when the shipping etc is tacked on. so that's what i'll order for my frame.

i was able to thin it out a bit, and i sprayed it on. it levels out pretty good so i blasted it. so from what i got outta the pint, 5% thin with lauquer thinner, i was able to get about 3 coats on my rad support, and 2 coats on my inner fenders. which wasn't too bad. i really laid it on my rad support esp in the nasty spots. it's still a little tacky now but it should be dry by the morning...

fyi, the marine clean is some nasty stuff. cleared off the grime everywhere i sprayed it but don't get that stuff on ur bare skin.

nothing really today, plugged the hole up since the por15 dried.

pulled out my fenders, saw a small ding, so put it back in the box cuz i don't have any light filler to use til tomorrow. day was shot.
